Pat Atkins Posted 4 March , 2021 Share Posted 4 March , 2021 From list posted 23rd October 2020: 203417 Pte Kelly, W., Cameron Highlanders has some papers on FMP. They show him as enlisting on 4th August 1915 into 4th Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders as 3671 Pte Kelly, William, given age 19 years and 1 month. He arrived in France on 1th July 1916 and was posted to 1st Bn QOCH. On 31st October 1916 he was sent from the front to No19 IBD at Etaples, and thence back to the UK as being underage - his real d.o.b. was 3rd August 1898 (he'd actually been 17 on enlistment). William eventually returned in France with 7th QOCH, and was wounded in action on 13th December 1917; he was sent (via No31 Ambulance Train) to No1 Scottish General Hospital at Aberdeen until 12th February 1918. He was disembodied at the end of March 1919 and discharged early 1920. At some point he seems to have had the regimental number 7911, but I can't see quite how. Pat Atkins Posted 4 March , 2021 Share Posted 4 March , 2021 From list posted 6th October 2020: 76151 Pte Kay, W., 1/7th KLR - he has some papers on FMP: Kay was from Shoreditch, a letter press printer, aged 33 on enlistment on 25th August 1915 into KLR (No18 Works Company). He was in France from 4th September 1917, posted in short succession to 20th then 1/7th Bn KLR. After hospitalisation to the UK via No31 Ambulance Train, he served with 3rd (Home Service) Garrison Bn Northumberland Fusiliers in Cork, regimental number 2064690(?), and then joined the Royal Defence Corps with the number 84477. He served with 463 Protection company, Belfast; 452 PC; 341 Company. He was discharged to Class Z Reserve on 10th April 1919. I can't find a MIC for him anywhere, oddly. Pat Atkins Posted 5 March , 2021 Share Posted 5 March , 2021 (edited) From the list posted 13 September, 2020: 24159 Pte Dewhurst, J., 6 West Yorks has some papers on FMP to show him as aged 42 on enlistment with 2/6th West Yorks on 19/4/1915 for 4 years, with the original number 4131. He served in France 7/1/1917 - his hospitalisation with eczema in December 1917; he was discharged with a Silver War Badge on 7/2/1918. 2753 Tpr Brown, F. , Household Bn also has some papers on FMP. He was Frank Brown, a married schoolmaster who attested 4/12/1915 aged 25 into the Reserve Household Bn, and was placed on Army Reserve until mobilised on 16/4/1917. On returning from hospital and convalescence he was transferred to 3rd Coldstream Guards (number 25751) on 10/5/1918 and then to 2nd Grenadier Guards (number 34634) on 17/6/1918; he was wounded in action (GSW forehead) on 27/9/1918 and returned to duty a month later. Pat Atkins Posted 5 March , 2021 Share Posted 5 March , 2021 (edited) From list posted 31st July 2020: 20282 Pte McLaughlin, F., 6th RSF C Coy has other medical records on FMP which show hime at 18th General Hospital on 29/2/1917 having been wounded in the arm on 27/2/1917 at Plug St (sic). I'm not familiar with the coding of wounds, so have included a screenshot below of the entry: "viii L Arm (1) Sev." There is an annotation, "Hosp ship Calais 2/3/16". There is another medical record which might be from late 1915 (also 18th GH); however, while there is a BW&VM rolls entry for Frank McLaughlin (giving him as Labour Corps, ex-6th RSF) I can find no 1914-15 Star record for him. There is a pension card, just a transcription on Ancestry, which gives both his RSF number and his Labour Corps number (541959). Spelling of his surname is all over the place, throughout! 514509 Pte Linden, M., 9th KLR att. labour Corps has medal rolls entries showing he was previously 9th KLR number 2336 (renumbered in 1917 to 330463), and that 514509 is in fact his Labour Corps number. He entered France on 12/3/1915 with 9th KLR. 37418 Pte Sagar, J., 1st East Lancs is James Thomas Sagar. Pat Atkins Posted 5 March , 2021 Share Posted 5 March , 2021 On list posted 8th July 2020, two RFC men: 10529 3AM Williams, J., 37 KBS (Kite Balloon Section) RFC. His later RAF number was 402534, and prior to RFC service he'd been in 7th Lancashire Fusiliers, number 2423. He was awarded the Territorial Force War Medal (there's a medal card for this on Ancestry). 15316 1AM Fast, E.G., 13 Squadron RFC. He was Ernest George Fast from Neasden; he has a few papers on FMP showing his civilian occupation and his RFC/RAF muster as "motor cyclist", served with 13 and 15 Squadrons. Date of birth 1892, enlisted RFC 9/11/1915, entry into theatre of war (France) 21/1/1916, discharged to RAF Reserve 12/3/1919.
Pat Atkins Posted 5 March , 2021 Share Posted 5 March , 2021 From list posted 3rd July 2020: 8831 Cpl Partridge, F., RFC. His RAF papers on FMP show that Frederick Partridge, from Cricklewood, enlisted 21/9/1915 aged 19; hs civilian occupation is given as clerk, and he trained and mustered as a Wireless Operator, serving with 22, 34 and 52 Squadrons, as well as other units. Her served in France from 19/3/1916, returning to Home Establishment in December 1917. He was placed on the RAF Reserve on 24/2/1920. 204364 Pte Morris, G.B., 2nd West Riding Regt. George Brince(?) Morris has some papers on FMP showing he enlisted in 4th (R) Bn West Riding Regt. on 5/3/1917 aged 31; he was a father of 5 from Bradford. He arrived in France on 1/6/1917 and was posted to 2nd West Riding Regt; he was gassed on 27/11/1917 and rejoined his unit on 6/12/1917, only to be hospitalised with "DAH" (no idea, sorry) a few days later. His MIC gives his 2nd West Riding number as 21858, not 204364, and indicates subsequent service as number 860598 with 33rd Bn London Regt; the BW&VM rolls entry is for the London Regiment, and show his overseas service as (France) 1/6/1917-27/12/1917 and (France again) 3/7/1918-11/11/1918; it seems likely his second stint overseas was with 33rd Londons, their date of entry into France was 3/7/1918. Pat Atkins Posted 5 March , 2021 Share Posted 5 March , 2021 From list posted 24th June 2020: 29961 Pte Eccleston, T., 1/5th LNLR is Theodore Eccleston who enlisted into 6th Border Regt on 21/9/1914 and served in Gallipoli with that battalion, number 12956 (his entry into theatre date is wrong, as is not unknown with Middle Eastern records - here, it's given as 1/7/1915, the date 6th Border Regt left Liverpool for Gallipoli); his 1914-15 Star shows two periods of service with 6th Border Regt, followed by 7th LNLR and 1st ditto. It's possible that the two periods with 6th Borderers are either side of an illness or wounding, as is also possible his transfer between regiments; obviously, they could have other administrative causes too. He was discharged with a Silver War Badge on 13/11/1918. 3260 Tpr Irons, E.A., Household Bn is Ernest Arthur Irons, a baker from Hinckley, married with one young child when he enlisted on 5/7/1917 aged 25. He was transferred from 1st Household Bn to the Coldstream Guards on 4/4/1918, serving with the number 23484, and was discharged unfit on 14/11/1918 with a Silver War Badge (his MIC for this notes "neurasthenia"). 508012 Pte Sweeting, E.G., 13th London Regt, has a MIC which gives his pre-1917 TF number as 6720; his first name was Ernest and he subsequently served as number 60615 with the KRRC. Pat Atkins Posted 8 March , 2021 Share Posted 8 March , 2021 (edited) From list posted today: 290347 Dvr Cook, E., 38th Welsh Heavy Battery has fairly extensive papers on FMP relating mostly to disciplinary matters; I won't go into detail here. They provide an overview of service, too: Edgar Charles Cook attested with the service number 30 on 27/03/1915 with 38th Welsh Heavy Battery, RGA. In a chequered career, he served in No1 Reserve Battery RGA and overseas (France & Flanders) from September 1916 with 120 Heavy Battery RGA, being wounded in action on 26/11/1916. A single undated sick list on FMP shows him as serving with 39 Heavy Battery RGA. There is a RGA Short Service attestation for him dated 08/03/1919. 290347 was the number allocated to Dvr Cook in the 1917 TF re-numbering. Pat Atkins Posted 24 March , 2021 Share Posted 24 March , 2021 (edited) List posted today (24th March 2021): 305383 Pte Haslam, C, 2/8th Sherwood Foresters is in fact Cecil Heslam, and has a MIC and Medal rolls entry (BW&VM) in that name. 512389 Spr Sadler, R is in fact James Russell Sadler (he seems to have habitually used Russell as a first name). He has a fair few papers on FMP, though many are damaged. He was a carpenter from Falmouth and enlisted aged 21 into 3rd Works Company, Cornwall (Fortress) RE on 7th December 1914. His original Territorial Force service number was 741; 512389 will be his number after the 1917 renumbering of the TF. He served with the BEF from 3rd October 1915, spending a week in hospital in May 1916 with a septic left foot. His hospitalisation in December 1917 led to him being treated in the UK; he was discharged on 23rd March 1918 "wound healed" and was back in France at the RE Base Depot on 20th May 1918, joining 427 Field Company on 8th June 1918 and quickly injuring himself on a loose duckboard (sprained ankle, found not culpable for injury) which sent him briefly to hospital again. Sapper Sadler was returned to the UK on 23rd January 1919 for demobilisation (Group 30) on 12th February. On 17/03/2021 at 10:26, Bardess said: Reinforcement Company? Sounds plausible, but - can't find any reference to such a thing existing... Sorry... Edited 24 March , 2021 by Pat Atkins
