While too much shouldn't be read into it, it must be a strong possibility that most if not all the men that boarded from the same location came through the same place, (1 CCS at Chocques, 7 CCS at Merville for example) and those that disembarked at the same location on the same day with similar health problems may well have ended up in the same hospital - most of the STD patients identified for these two pages seem to have ended up at the 51st General Hospital at Etaples for example. Similarly, while too much shouldn't be inferred, for the men from these two pages who have other surviving records, a 'blighty' seems to consist of boils, hernias. gonorrhoea, dysentery, epilepsy and eczema! One last update. On page 6 Private 15671 F. Robinson, 1/5 Cheshires could not be identified. In fact there are service records for him that show him going on to be renumbered 244271 and subsequently transfer to the Royal Engineers with service number 447200. I was colouring by ward in case it provided any clue as to where these men came from and went to. In many instances the ward record goes across at least two pages in the original document. That imposes an arbitrary division that it doesn't make sense to persist with in any investigation. The names highlighted in yellow are the one where they could not be identified in the original run through, otherwise I just kept your original black or red text colours. They are for No.18 General Hospital. Some of the relevant service records show this as being at Camiers, while one says Dannes, Camiers. The LLT shows No.18 being at Camiers from February 1915 to June 1915 when it was taken over by the US Army. https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/regiments-and-corps/british-base-hospitals-in-france/ There are also references to men being transferred to “6CD”, (on other pages and in some service records, “6 Con Dep”). My working assumption is that refers to No.6 Convalescent Camp. There are online references to that being at Etaples. In 1918 https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/26719-rest-stations-and-convalescence-depots/ Specifically in February 1917 as a place where Red Cross Nurses were working http://www.scarletfinders.co.uk/183.html Three further note about the admissions and discharge book for No.18 General Hospital which is relevant to all the pages that relate to the 31 Ambulance Train arrival on the 20th January 1917. The first is that the order of the entries in the Hospital book does not parallel those in the Ambulance Train one. Part of the reason I started looking initially was to see if this shed light on the names that could not previously be identified. Thus while there are some candidates, and this means that all the entries in the Hospital book for British soldiers can be matched up with the Ambulance Train, (important caveat – but not the other way round), it does depend on assuming that all the queries in both sets of records tie up. Thus for example, the Ambulance Train Casualty 21098 on page 8 is shown as Private 18505, A. Prennser, C. Company, 11th Royal Warwicks, diagnosed with Trench Foot. There is no match on the No. 18 General Hospital records for that name, but there is a Private 18585 A.T. Primmer, C Company, 11th Royal Warwicks diagnosed with Trench Foot. There is a MiC for A.T. Primmer. The second is that as well as the British patients shown as arriving aboard No.31 Ambulance Train at Camiers on the 20th January 1917 on the Hospital Records, there are also a number of Canadians as well. Either that is an error on the part of the Hospital clerical staff, on the clerks associated with 31 Ambulance Train must have kept a separate register. Either way it calls into question the accuracy and completeness of these books as a sourced of factual information unless it can be adequately confirmed from another source. Finally, in the admissions and discharges book for No.18 General Hospital there is a curiously titled final column. The clerks who completed it at the time probably understood and completed it in a standard way, but to me it is so nebulous that I doubted whether there was any point using the information. OBSERVATIONS Number and page of case book to be quoted for all cases recorded in it. In transfers the designation of the hospital or sick convoy, to which or from which transferred, must be noted here, and any other facts bearing on the man’s destination; also in moveable field hospitals the place where the admission, &c. took place should be indicated. Place of action to be noted in case of wounds and injuries received in action. The entries in the column are either a place name, a ditto mark or blank. All have a date. As the men were all transferred in and transferred out, the ambiguous wording in the column header could mean a variety of scenarios apply. However the dates are before the hospital admission so the logical interpretation is that for combat wounds and injuries it’s the location where they happened and for everything else it’s the moveable field facility, (Field Ambulance, Casualty Clearing Station), that they first reported to. I’ve therefore shown the place, with a question mark, in the “From” column. So here's what I could find out for the men listed on page 7. Update 06/01/2019 - when I looked originally at the book for 18 General Hospital, the list finished at the bottom of a page and there were then several pages to the end of the book detailing operations carried out - surgeons names, etc. I assumed there were no more patients who disembarked from No.31 Ambulance Train and were taken to this hospital. However as I found when researching names from later on in the Ambulance Train list of patients, FMP have the next volume of the records from the hospital and the first half a page in the new book are more patients transferred from the train. This provided some more information for two of the names on page 7, including details that might provide a clue for one of the unknowns. 31 Ambulance Train has patient 21088 as Private 12762 C Rodgers as C Company 11th Battation Royal Warwickshire Regiment, diagnosed with Albuminuria. 18 General Hospital has Private 14812 C H Rodgers, B Company, 13th Battalion attached 11th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, disgnosed with Bronchitis. Atkins, 14th Londons, (no matching MiC) with Compound fracture of tibia and fibula. I speculated it was possibly 5327 Garnet S Atkins. From his service record it was possible to identify that 5327 Garnet Atkins was admitted to 11th General Hospital at Dannes, Camiers, on the 20th January 1917. He was treated for fractures resulting from an accidental GSW. The damage was so severe he was subsequently discharged. Patient 21097 Private 4206 T. Shayler, 13th Londons, (no matching MiC). You believed him to be Benjamin Shayler, this regiment and service number. 18th General Hospital records him as B. T. Shayler. Patient 21098 Private 18505 A Prennser, "C" Company, 11th Royal Warwicks, (no matching MiC) being treated for Trench Feet. I speculated it might be 28959 Albert C Rencher. In fact 18th General Hospital records him as 18585 A.T. Primmer, same unit and condition. This is a MiC match for those details. FMP have transcribed his surname in the 18 General Hospital records as Sedgley and put him in C Company. Still no likely MiC match. Patient 21179 Sapper 25011 E Denyer, 158 Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers, who also could not previously be identified. On FMP there is a Silver War Badge for 25011 Ernest George Denyer, Hampshire Regiment, who had served overseas. The National Archive have it catalogued as 2501(Incomplete), but Ancestry show it as 25011. Many men were temporarily transferred to Tunnelling Companys from Infantry Battalions and subsequently returned. It may simply be that the MiC and Service Medal Roil don't reflect this. There are no surviving service records that I could track down but 7357 Frank Armstrong was discharged from the Army on the 28/03/17 as no longer physically fit according to his Silver War Badge record. Patient 21329 Private 32173 J Turvey, 6th Bedfords was another one of the unidentified. There are surviving service records for Jesse Turvey who joined the 3rd Bedfords and was issued with this service number. He was transferred to the 6th Battalion on the 9th December 1916. After his hospitalisation he only saw service on the home front with the Labour Corps, service number 431509. Before and after. There are surviving service records for 15/1939 Ernest Tebay who was posted to the 1st Battalion in July 1916 but there are no surviving medical elements like the Casualty Active Service Sheet so it cannot be confirmed from that source if he was being treated for ICT at this time. Patient 21341 Private 6634 J. Allen, 9 Royal Sussex. You queried that this might be Royal (West) Surrey. 18th General Hospital records him as 12th Battalion attached 9th Battalion Royal Sussex. Patient 21342 4503 Boulton, 4 MMR attached F.A. HQ was one of the unidentified. 18 General Hospital records him as A Boulton, West Riding attached 1 Army H.Q. but there was still no MiC match. There are however surviving service records for a Private 4503 Norman Boulton, 3/4 West Riding Regiment - note some of the pages show him as Bolton. The medical records they contain show the same dates and places. He would go on to serve with 141st Labour Company with Service Number 386503. Patient 21344 Private 10589 W Mathers, 106 Brigade, RFA. I suggested this might be 11587 William Mather Mathers, RFA. There are surviving Service Records for 11587 and the Medical Information shown in them ties up with these condition and location details. Percy has surviving service records which contains serveral variations on the 88275 Service Number, usually overwritten and corrected. 88257 appears in a letter from a friend enquiring about Percy after he was wounded and captured towards the end of the war. It also looks like their was some internal correspondence about what was the correct number. Patient 21371 Private 7026 A. Kearsey 8 Londons was one of the unidentified. I suggested that it might be 7026 John Kenealy 18th Londons but I've since discoved that man died in August 1916. Patient 21372 Rifleman 6351 L Nash, 16th Londons, was one of the unidentified. There are surviving Service Records for 6351 Louis Nash, 16th Londons, who was subsequently renumbered 552986 2/12 Londons. The Medical Information they contain would indicate this is the same man. Some of Matthews' service records have survived but there is nothing in them that confirms whether he had medical treatment during this period. Patient 21398 Rifleman 4637 G. Stiles 9 Londons was another one of the unidentified. I suggested he was possibly the G.Stiles, 9th London, who has a MiC under Service Number 391630 and who might have been renumbered. I didn't have any joy with service records but looking at surrounding service numbers 391627 Frederick G Jones, Londons, had previously been 4621 according to the NA catalogue. Actual card shows 9th Londons. 391626 John Watkins, Londons, had previously been 4620 according to the NA catalogue. Actual card shows 9th Londons. and 391632 Frederick J Haines, 9th Londons had previously been 4634 according to the NA catalogue. Patient 21400 Private 6530 A Poyntz, 12th Londons, was another unidentified and was diagnosed with Trench Foot. I believe him to be the Albert William Poyntz whose card was indexed at the NA with service number 493321. Looking at the card itself, written above the service number box is "6520". There are surviving service records for that man but there are nothing in them to indicate that he was in the medical evacuation chain in this time period. However what is there was that he returned to the UK on the 27th January 1917 and was then attached to the Depot establishment. What can possibly be implied from that is that he was long term sick or injured. He was subsequently discharged on the 6th July 1917 and a pension awarded for "Double Trench Feet". Patient 21403 Private 5517 C Bailey, 13th Londons was another unidentified. I believe him to be the Charles William Bailey whose card was indexed at the NA with service number 492450. Looking at the card itself, written above the service number box is "5517". There are surviving service records for that man but there are no medical details. However what is there was that he returned to the UK on the 5th February 1917 and moved onto the establishment of the depot. He was subsequently discharged as physically unfit on the 26th December 1917 without ever going abroad again. Patient 21404 Private 214059 G. Horton, 13th Royal Fusiliers, another unidentified. I speculated that he might the soldier for whom there is a MiC as 24059 George W. Horton. There are some service records for that man, but again no relevant medical details. There is a service records for 24059 George Horton which show him serving with the 13th Royal Fusiliers until he was returned to the UK on the 10th February 1917. Patient 21412 Private 6275 H H Bullivant, 14th Londons. I speculated this might be 512456 Hubert H Bullivant who might subsequently have been renumbered. No service records but looking at the nearby service numbers. 512455 Alexander R Arnott 14th Londons had previously been 6274 14th Londons according to the MiC details in the NA Catalogue. 512460 Murray Hamilton 14th Londons had previously been 6280 14th Londons according to the MiC details in the NA Catalogue. Patient 21414 Private 1644 P Mahoney, 1st Londons. I speculated this might be 200236 Patrick Mahoney who might subsequently have been renumbered. Dewley, 13th Londons. I believed this to be Private 4882 George Bewley in my initial response. Some of the service records for George Bewley survive and these confirm he started 1917 with the 13th Battalion. There are no medical details in whats there, but his service history shows him in the UK from the 31st January 1917 and posted to the Depot Establishment. I would normally take that to mean he was long term sick \ injured and so taken off the establishment of his fighting battalion and moved on to that of the depot for pay, admin and discipline purposes, and so I would argue that this can be taken as a proxy for him being unwell during the relevant period. Edwards, 12 Londons. My initial guess is that this was Ailwyn Lewis Edwards, 12th Londons. Although he had a completely different six digit service number, a check of London Regiment men with nearby service numbers showed they had been renumbered from the four digit 42* range. There are two surviving pages on FMP for 4256 Ailwyn Lewis Edwards, 12th Londons - his declaration as a Territorial Force man that he agreed to serve overseas. So likely he was caught up in the Territorial Force renumbering at the start of 1917 - which I suspect is a recurring problem for those soldiers for whom no matching MiC could be identified. Patient 21478 Private 22909 A E Towers 13 "L Fus" - one of the unidentified. I would assume his unit to be the Lancashire Fusiliers from that abbreviation. I note however that the Northumberland Fusiliers record set available on FMP has a Private 22909 Henry Edward Towers, 13th Northumberland Fusilers. He served from 1915 in France and was subsequently transferred to the Labour Corps. There are no surviving service records so for now I can only put him forward as a possibily.
