Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 22 August , 2018 Share Posted 22 August , 2018 Well done! Most poignant... One asks oneself why they did not join, say, the ASC - or even fly with the RFC - rather than becoming, en masse, Infantry officers. Kindest regards, Kim. Louis Stokes 1916 Posted 22 August , 2018 Author Share Posted 22 August , 2018 Many Rugbeians did join the RFC actually, and a terrible proportion of them died in flying accidents. Quite a few in highland regiments too (though they're still infantry, of course). Louis' two best friends, both of whom also died, were RFC and RFA. As a former naval officer myself I was sorry to see that very few joined the RN, but then most naval officers of the time went to Dartmouth or Osborne rather than a public school. Louis Stokes 1916 Posted 22 August , 2018 Author Share Posted 22 August , 2018 That reminds me too - I think it was the 6th Manchesters who had nine Old Rugbeian officers out of the thirty or so in the battalion. Extraordinary.
