Remembered Today:

'Finding Louis' - 2nd Lt Louis Stokes RMLI

Louis Stokes 1916

Recommended Posts

Dear all,

I am currently cataloguing a huge number of documents relating to 2nd Lt Louis Stokes RMLI, killed at Beaumont Hamel on the 13th of November 1916. They were found in a battered old leather suitcase in the archives of Rugby School, which Louis attended between 1911 and 1916. Some of his letters were published in 1995 in 'A Dear and Noble Boy', but there is much more besides - all of his letters home from Rugby School and the Royal Marines between 1911 and 1916, all of his school reports and bills, his letter offering a commission, Cambridge application, postcards, telegrams, poems and essays. Even his dog tags and the telegrams informing his parents of his death, as well as lots of letters of condolence.

I am running a blog to highlight what I find, and you can keep up to date with it here: https://findinglouis1916.wordpress.com/

I read the book. Most poignant.

Kindest regards,

Kim.

I assume that you will be mentioning Frank de Pass VC in

due course. I visited his grave today. There's a quote from Rupert Brooke on his stone and it mentioned he was educated at Rugby in the register.
