All,

This SWB was in my collection until recently. It was sold to an Irish collector. I can assure you that I found no evidence of G Simmonds being wounded in Dublin during my research. A J Simmonds was wounded and I suspect the information has been conflated in error. I can also tell you that when I originally bought the SWB on ebay some years ago it was under the 'second chance' offer because the high bidder realised after purchase that G Simmonds was discharged with Psoriasis not a GSW. Even if there was provenance putting G Simmonds on Mount Street Bridge I am not sure I see a 2-3000 euro hammer price?

regards

Mark

Mark,

Even less likely to reach that hammer price if anyone googles the whole issue and ends up reading this thread!!

I found the list of wounded in The Irish Times online J Simmonds is not IDd by number.

post-34209-0-20534100-1430844829_thumb.j

I can find all these names in WO casualty lists except Sheldon.

Smith & Snowden are listed in The Times 8th May.

Sharpe 17th May (not in the image I know but number given as 5553). Sharpe did apply for a SWB and had badge No. 22466 I wonder if his SWB would fetch that sort of price??

Simmonds and Stroud The Times 25th May.

If they were all wounded at Mount Bridge why the different dates for casualty list??

Smith & Snowden - that's 12 days from wounded to being in The Times.

Also odd that the Sherwood Foresters appear to have the most instances of Previously reported wounded now reported not wounded.

To coin an old phrase....... some thing is only worth what someone will pay for it............ but clearly that price is vastly inflated.

I have a load of old junk that I was just going to throw out.... might take it to this auctioneer and earn a small fortune.

I see the auctioneers have updated their listing for this SWB and added much information posted on this forum over the last 24 hours. They are insisting that George Simmonds has been incorrectly listed as J Simmonds in the Irish Times.

Quotes.

Simmonds was shot during an attack on an Irish Volunteer position

was wounded during the battle of Mount Street Bridge April 1916

he is listed in the Irish Times Rebellion Handbook as being wounded.

And note what Mark, the previous owner of the SWB says.

I found no evidence of G Simmonds being wounded in Dublin during my research

Hope we get some feedback on the hammer price on Saturday.

" A very rare military award to a British soldier injured in this engagement."

A somewhat ambiguous claim, surely? A Silver War Badge is hardly rare. Perhaps what the auction house means is that because the badge is linked to a British soldier wounded at Mount Street Bridge then it is a rare example.

Snipped

because the badge is linked to a British soldier wounded at Mount Street Bridge

Only linked by the auctioneers' description and not by any factual evidence.

So the forum rule about 'discussions about items for sale' doesn't apply to awards then?

Shame: as there are many people here able to warn about out and out wrong items in respect of uniform, equipment, ephemera on eBay etc; and are yet prevented from doing so.

Could I interest anyone in a SWB to a 9th Bn Sherwood Forester man wounded Gallipoli? Offers around £2000 :w00t:

If only he had been invalided out with Psoriasis Steve, my offer would have been in your inbox. Wounds? 9th Btn? Gallipoli? - Bahhh 2 a penny.

One internet bid only

Ouch!

That is surely a record for a SWB? - To slightly mis-quote Esther Rantzen...."unless someone else knows different?"

record price for a swb ? - probably not, but its an expensive lemon

From past experience I have found there to be errors in Handbook. Some of the surnames from the fatal casualty list are spelt incorrectly.

If you are using this as your primary reference source I would IMO show caution.

He did have a German army 4 year service badge as well (WW2) but I do not think it was his :))

Actually I had better check the SWB is his as I cannot find him on the list!

SWB 343446 - 25050 Musgrove - maybe he was an early collector!

Relax, he's on the Ancestry.list - Edwin Musgrove.

Cheers,
