Remembered Today:

Moustaches of the Great War

A recent QI programme added some minutia to my knowledge. Old Bill, the comic character invented by Captain Bruce Bairnsfather, sported a magnificent moustache. Policemen were encouraged to wear similar moustaches and hence their nickname "the Old Bill".

Warwick

Thanks for posting this - I had completely forgotten about these wonderful "Bulgarians"!

I will have to have another scan through that album.

Cheers

Sepoy

NB They certainly have an air of "Spike Milligan" about them......

Hi Anton,

Thank Sepoy, not me - It was his photograph!

I was just helping him remember things... it is a service we all need eventually  !!!

Time for my own medication....

On 16 July 1915 at 4.15pm the Germans suddenly fired five or six salvos of shrapnel and H.E. into Trois Tours Chateau grounds. N.W. of Ypres, near Brielen.

Major- General T.S.BALDOCK, CB, G.O.C. 49th Division, was outside at the time and was severely wounded in the head by a fragment of shell. He retired from the Army in 1916 and died in August 1937

Thank you for adding General Baldock. I think that his moustache must come under the following heading:-

"Salt and Pepper"

Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea of the names of any of the people shown in this thread (With the exception of the photograph in post 19 who is RSM Joseph Pain, 37th Foot. )
I would be most interested to find out who the Officer is in post 27. Equally, if any of the others are recognised I would be delighted to hear.

Terry

Brilliant - especially the first guy who is certainly a candidate for "Old Bill"!

If I remember correctly prior to 1908 Kings Regulations forbade the shaving of the top lip. All the group photos pre dating 1908 in the Battlefield Engineering Wing at the RSME back this up. So a lot of the old and bold carried it on. I try and maintain that tradition albeit my current RSM is not so chuffed that I do!

Excellent additions Guys..

LF I just love the juxtaposition photo Kaiser Bill in British uniform and KGV in German uniform!

Centurion who is the French "Senior" Officer?? And thank you for adding Gt Uncle Sidney, Imperial Camel Corps. Here is my Gt Uncle Max RND Engineers (sporting his tache) - Not quite the Western Desert though

Just a quick 'aside' was "old Bill" of moustache fame actually modeled on a real person?

khaki

I have a feeling that Bairnsfather based "Old Bill" on a photo of Private Sidney Godley VC Royal Fusiliers when he turned up as a German PoW. Needless to say I may be wrong

Sepoy

By the way Will

Baaah!

I wasn't sure that this would meet the standard of earlier taches posted here, but Centurions "restrained tache" has encouraged me...

this could best be described as the "early learner trial tache" - I have many photos of my GG uncle but this is the only one sporting personal facial hair!
