Indeed...hear hear!

I tried to start making individual portraits from photos I took of the picture last night but there were some issues with optical distortion in my photos that require me to rephotograph. I will tackle that this weekend so I hope to add a face to every name in this thread soon.

I also am compiling some info from Ancestry and will add that to this thread as well.

Phew!

Daniel, would you mind checking names and initials of those officers I haven't been able to find, please? I will email you a spreadsheet of the above research and annotated LG pages.

Cheers,

Stuart

So, I put it to my fellow pals....does this picture indeed contain William Davidson Bissett, and the photo is mislabeled, or do we think that fellow is somebody else?

Hello, Chris!

It was for this very reason I purchased and shared this photo on the GWF...in the hopes somone might have a connection to someone in it. I have been severely sidetracked in my effort to post the portraits in this thread but post them I will once a few other items get taken off the to-do list. I'll do my best to get the best portrait I can from the photo of Mr. Ritchie and will post it here as soon as I can.

Hello Daniel, You are an absolute gem and I thank you very much. There is no hurry but I thank you once again for all of your effort. By the way - did you name them left to right or right to left? Many thanks Christine

Hi Christine,

You are most welcome! They are named left to right in the photo. I'll see if I can also take a photo of John's name too, though the ink is faded and silvered, and hard to read even with good light. I'll try my best.

John Merry Paterson, who is in the 7th row, was my maternal Grandfather. He was injured at the battle for Polygon Wood on the 26th Sept 1917, spent the night in no mans land and was recovered on the 27th. Due to the severity of his injuries he was repatriated, while recovering in Hospital he was nursed by Helen Cairns Adamson Brown, who he married on Boxing Day 1918. He went on to have 3 children, my mother being the eldest. In civvy street he was a master tailor in partnership with his father Andrew Paterson, with premises at 6 Great Hamilton street Glasgow. He lived until 1978, dying in Harlow, Essex. I still have the engraved MC he was awarded.

I'd love a copy of the photo, not a single image of his wartime service has survived in our family.

Hi Andy,

I will do my best! I also realize to my great embarrasment that I never got Christine what she had asked for, and I apologize for losing sight of that request! I'll try to get these squared away this week.

Take care,

Daniel

These are the best I can manage at the moment. I am still looking for a large-format scanner so I can scan the whole thing in high resolution. I hope these are ok! :)

Many thanks for the John Merry Paterson photo, here is the original trimmed alongside a picture taken in about 1957. His nose looks a little different - it was broken in a boxing match while he was a cadet! Andy.

Hi Folks, as a further aside, in 1951 when I was 4, my Grandfather John Merry Paterson was a security guard, I think the only one, at Gailes camp where this photo was taken. I spent 2 nights having a sleepover at the camp with him, sleeping in a bunk in a bunkhouse, eating fried breakfasts and mucking about with hiis guard dog, a German Shepherd called Flame! His family had a big house in St Quivox Road Prestwick called Craiglour.

That's pretty amazing! I am very happy I was able to help in your research. Are there other things you are researching about his service that you haven't figured out yet?

Douglas William Milne, Gordon Highlanders, 23/11/1916, LG Issue 29852, 07/12/1916, p11951
Formerly Pte 3226, 14th London Regiment; BEF 18/03/1915
Lieutenant Gordon Highlanders

He is my Uncle, and I in fact lived in his house (with my Mother) for several years during WW II, so I knew him very well.

He was wounded in France in 1915, which is presumably why he was in England in 1916 on this course. He was taken prisoner in France in March 1918, and was not liberated until after the end of the War. I can still remember him, when I would not eat my greens, telling me "We would have been glad to find a blade of grass to eat" when he was in the prison camp.

His Father was William Milne, a noted career soldier who enlisted in the famous 92nd (Gordon Highlanders) in 1870, and fought in India and South Africa, including the battle at Majuba Hill. He returned to England in 1882, and joined the London Scottish as sergeant instructor. He was Captain of the British Olympic small bore shooting team at the Stockholm Olympics in 1912, and was appointed a member of the King's Bodyguard of the Yeomen on the Guard. On retirement, he became steward of the London Scottish Golf Club at Wimbledon, where his son Douglas was born. He died in 1923, and there is an obituary to him from one of the national papers in my possession.

Douglas was a prominent member of The Home Guard in Cambridge during WW II. His son is still alive (2013) and lives in Kent.

What an incredible chance to find a photo of him! Well done for grasping the opportunity and then making it publicly available. If you can manage an enhanced detail photo of him (Row 6, 5th in) then both I and his son would be very very grateful.

I also received a request via PM for a close-up of James Barclay Murdoch Young:

I am quite pleased that my one impulse buy has been so helpful to so many of my fellow pals. Should I ever get a better scan and better portraits I will be in touch with all who have made requests thus far and in the future.
