Remembered Today:

Snow on the Somme today

Tim Wright

Recommended Posts

So, the fog has gone and now we have beautiful fresh snow that fell overnight.

In some places it is 15cms deep.

The 4 pictures are of Adanac Cemetery, Regina trench cemetery, Sunken lane below Grandcourt trench facing in the direction of Courcelette and the skyline from Grandcourt trench across Grandcourt in the direction of Thiepval.

Thanks for posting, Tim.

You should have an official "GWF Photographer" badge.

Hi Ken.

I bet you've already got one of those badges in your extensive collection.

I need a badge that you haven't got.

Tim.

It might look nice, but it means it is cold, cold, cold. Thank goodness for a real xmas in Australia where it will be around the 40C mark, I hope.

Phew! Just realised those photos were a fortnight ago! Pas neige ajourdui je pense. Cos I'm driving through the region tomorrow. There is no such thing as "nice snow".!

The forecast was right, we had more snow, just about 5 times the amount forecast. Is it cold? last night we recorded -14 c with the highest during the day at -6 c.

A few images of the recent fall.

Outside Maricourt, marking the position, when on July the 1st 1916 the French front line joined the British front line. With Trones Wood in the background.

The roads are all clear of snow and ice. I drove from Calais to the Somme on Tuesday evening in a blizzard. Had it been the UK I don't think we would have made it, but I saw 6 gritters on the A26 between Calais and Lens, working in pairs and the road remained passable. All the roads through the villages have been cleared and are easily passable.

Having said all that, I do have a 4x4 and that allows me to use the tracks like Grass Lane, too.
