I was not aware of this project to identify Canadians buried in the UK. I note that the Canadian Virtual War Memorial does not show the updated information perhaps we need to check all of them?

Does someone have a master list who is being researched?

The record for William Edward DAVIES is out of date in 2 ways.

Davies grave was found in 2013 and the memorial mentioned above was inaugurated and dedicated on the 4th November last year*.

(This memorial replaced the original United Kingdom 1914-1918 Memorial which was too small).

Davies is not, of course, listed on this.

______

These were Canadians who died in the UK. They were not always buried in the UK. Some were repatriated.

These are the IN FROM THE COLD cases we have been working on in Canada to help the CWGC Agency in Canada:

John Allen is one of those cases.

Hello Richard,

I reported the find of Osbourne's grave to CWGC quite sometime ago. As for Allan I am just letting people know not claiming credit for myself.

I have forwarded this to Greg Young who runs the 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders) memorial project. Thanks!

I have received the following information back from Greg Young:

Morning Richard,

27362 Pte Alfred Johnson, 15th Battalion, No. 1 Company: I have attached scans of his Battalion Record of Services card which simply indicate he was SOS of the battalion and transferred to the UK on 23 May 1915.

Like many of the cards for men who did survive past 2nd Ypres and/or Festubert in 1915, the information is very scant.

Battalion Part 2 Orders No. 11 for 23 May 1915 simply indicates he was SOS - scan attached.

However, if you look at the other names of men also SOS that date the reasons stated for their departure all are connected to their fate at 2nd Ypres - ie: POWs, died of gas poisoning, MIA, etc.

Although it does not specifically state the reason next to his name or the other approx. 10 men listed with him, I would bet the reason is wounds/injuries/etc received at Ypres. For example, we know that Capt McLaren who was in the same company as Johnson, was SOS because of wounds received. A quick look a cards for several other men also in that group indicates injuries/wounds/etc.

So unless his service file reveals something different, it is logical to assume his was SOS for medical reasons as well. Did he eventually die in 1919 as a result of those wounds/injuries received - a good guess but we would need confirmation from the file. the fact he is listed by CWGC and that his name appears on the Brookwood memorial as a 15th Battalion member would seem to support that.

We have a file on Edward Sweet and we had heard he had been found. Jerry did not give us any details. If his grave was found in Morven, why does he have a Special Memorial?

SWEET, Edward Freeman –#83529 3- CWGC FOUND

We have no information, in fact no knowledge of Eli Lambert. Do you have background on that fellow?

Hello Richard,

IFCP has nothing on Sweet as we had no involvement in finding him.

One of our researchers checked the Canada War Graves Registers (Circumstances of Casualty) 1914-18 & it gave the following details for this chap

St Ambrose RC Cemetery, Manitoba

Grave: Plot N W Corner. Private memorial

I have no idea why CWGC have gone down the special memorial route

Cheers

Chris
