chrisharley9 Posted 11 October , 2009 Author Share Posted 11 October , 2009 Name: HANNIS, ALFRED WILLIAM Initials: A W Nationality: Canadian Rank: Corporal Regiment/Service: Canadian Engineers Unit Text: 2nd Tram Coy. Date of Death: 12/07/1921 Service No: 463633 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Memorial: BROOKWOOD (UNITED KINGDOM 1914-1918) MEMORIAL Candie Cemetery, St Peter Port, Guernsey I have attached the body of the e mail from Guernsey I have been trying to find the information you require relating to Alfred William Hannis. I found the details of the death and burial of a William Alfred Hannis the death occurring on the 12 July 1921 and the burial on the 15 July. The problem is that our details do not match up very well with those you have. On the Civil Death Register it states that he was the son of John Hannis (mother’s name not given). He lived and died at the Lower Rohais in St.Peter Port, Guernsey and his place of birth was Worcestershire in England. His occupation was given as a gardener. However, there is one clue in that one of the causes of death was bronchiectasis as a result of gassing. His burial was in Candie Cemetery in St.Peter Port but there is no headstone. The death notice in the Guernsey Press of 13 July 1921 read as follows: HANNIS On July 12 at St.Andrew’s Place, Lower Rohais, William Alfred Hannis, dearly loved husband of L.A.Hannis, aged 53 years and 8 months. Deeply regretted. Funeral to leave the house at 3 p.m. on Friday 15 July for Candie Cemetery. Military honours. Friends please accept this the only intimation. Men only. Michael Johnson Posted 16 November , 2009 Share Posted 16 November , 2009 Here's a description of how he was killed: http://www.couplandbell.com/marg/crashes1917.htm I can't see how he would have been repatriated to Canada. Moreover, I can't see any connection with Dorchester, as he was attending the University of Toronto, and his medal (BWM only) was sent to his father at 65 Gothic Avenue, Toronto. Michael Johnson Posted 18 November , 2009 Share Posted 18 November , 2009 Walter's father was Charles Coutts, shown as born in Ontario, Scotch background. That suggests to me that he wasn't buried in a family plot, at least not in England. If we can rule that out, it is likely that he was buried close to Castle Bromwich. I wonder if there is a squadron log that might give details of his funeral?
