Interested to know how the reject got through the initial screening process. Were there unknown factors involved?

He was one of mine - an RAF officer who died in 1919 (or so I thought). He was found in the early trial days of searching the GRO Overseas Death Index to check the viability of doing so prior to the set up of The In From The Cold Project.

The casualty was killed in an air crash in 1919 and had a full overseas military death certificate. This is all that is required for a serving casualty to prove qualification for commemoration and so the case was put forward. After about a year or so the case was rejected by the RAF on the grounds that he was a civilian when he died.

As this was at variance with him having a military death certificate, I decided to dig deeper before I made an appeal. I should have done so earlier! I very quickly found him listed in the London Gazette as leaving the RAF and his being appointed to the Order of the British Empire (Civil Division)! Had he still been serving, it would have been to the Military Division.

MoD were correct. He died flying as a civilian. An unusual case and his having a military death certificate was probably brought about by his still using his rank in civilian life.

Chris

This was the case of a regular soldier listed in SDGW as dying on 22.08.14.

His service record showed that he had been discharged from the army on 17.08.14 but immediately enlisted in the reserves. Sadly, he was hospitalised whilst still a reservist and died following an operation in his home hospital only five days later on 22.08.14 due to a non-service related cause before being recalled to the colours. It seems probable that the cause pre-existed 04.08.14 and would not count as it was not contracted during the qualifying period.

MoD rejected him due to his reservist status (non-serving soldier) and the cause of death being not being service related during the qualifying period (not a post-service qualifier either).

A rare set of circumstances.

Hi Terry, is there a master list available of the accepted names, together with some of their details?

It would be interesting to me (and maybe others) to read their stories, and to individually remember them.

Jim

I do hold a master list.

Each name is announced on GWF with an 'In From The Cold' post as it is entered in the CWGC database. Often the names I put forward for GWF members are given full details by those members after the announcing post. Those which I put forward on behalf of the In From The Cold Project have announcements which include the cause of death etc.

If you PM me your email address, I will send you a copy of the master list (without circumstances) and you can keep up to date from future 'In From The Cold' announcements in this section.
