Casualty Lists

List HA 23171 above shows two County Palatine Royal Engineers:

81908 L/Cpl David Platt and 81368 Spr John B Shaw. Both went out to France in November 1915 with 30 Div RE. Thank you for this.

How many of these lists must there have been ? No wonder there was a paper shortage.

Thank you. Another one for me. 402 CPL. J.W. PARKIN. 18/MX. R.  I have the BWM, 1914/5 star to 402 PTE. J.W. PARKIN. MIDD'X R. If anyone has the victory medal it would be nice to reunite.

Brian,

With the help of David26 who has indexed and dated the lists posted here along with the 5,000+ that I have found on FMP I have started to try and make sense of the list prefix and how many there were. These are my initials findings, any thoughts welcome.

Those list with prefix H appear to start in early July 1915 H104 is the first I have around the same date as those without a prefix finished. I have no. 29869, so maybe when they got to 30000 they started using H. but possibly began at H100

The last H prefix I have is H9842 dated 8 June 1916. I think they stopped when they got to H9999 and then started with HA as I have HA 281 dated 19 June 1916 so again I think they started at HA100 going to 38871 in Jan 1919

Prefix HB started at the same time as HA covering the same areas it seems. I have HB103 dated 9 June 1916 and HB 19606 dated 20 Jan 1920

HC looks to cover Egypt later Egypt & Salonica the earliest I have is H249 3 Jun 1916 to HC 4883 28 Jun 1918

HD covers the Persian Gulf and occasionally later on India I have HD275 from 11 Jun 1916 to HD 10658 21 Sept 1919

HW is for progress reports by post I have HW 137 from 15 Apr 1917 to HW2887 16 Feb 1919

P (Progress lists) are another matter along with B (Balkans) E, In (India) PG, X (POW) as well as amendment lists.

Dave, thanks for putting up the lists, I'm scanning every new batch.

I had in mind from some time back that HA lists were for admissions to hospitals in France and HB for admissions to UK hospitals.

Tew,

Thanks for that tip, a quick look through some of the lists I have confirms your observations.

As well as continuation sheets I am finding multiple lists with the same prefix and number. H5906 which I’ll post at some point has 7 different pages.

Latest posting on a sheet for C.R.3438 shows 863 PTE. A. ROBERTS. 11/RIF.BDE. "A". I have a 1914/5 star and BWM to Z-863 PTE. T. ROBERTS. RIF.BRIG. I can find no MIC for the former. I initially thought that A might be Anthony adjusted to Tony for the medal naming but my man is actually Tom. If anyone finds that these are two different men I should like to know.

And in the same list three men of interest to me from 59 Bde and 11 DAC, so thanks Dave!

Dave,

by my reckoning you have added just over 2500 lists to this thread from this source so far.  So, with about a quarter of the Newfoundlander records yet to go through, we're looking at a possible total of about 3300 lists from this one (very rich) source.

That's just amazing.

David.

Does this mean you have gleaned another 5000 from FMP. If so these are not ones already within this topic?

I'm intrigued by the indexing project going on in the background, lots of questions but will wait and see what develops.

Thanks
