Annette, I apologize my harsh attitude. I din't mean anything by it, I just know that you can do much better with your own ideas ;)

To be honest, the sentiment about a world of monochrome at the front,

I read in a memoir recently (can't recall which) and it stuck.

The rest just built itself up around that mental image....

Its funny but I was going to suggest that the line would be stronger if you said "a broken world of monochrome" not "the broken world" and you have used "a world" it when you were explaining your inspiration. The only reason I felt it was better because it gave a strong sense of another an alternative existence running parrallel to the normality away from the front.

I probably will not be able to submit anything this month as I am off on my holidays and Mrs Gunboat may well be resentful if I nip off to an internet point instead of applying suntan lotion.

Good luck everybody and I will enjoy catching up when I return in two weeks

Have a good holiday......

Strange - I used "the world" because it I tought it conveyed the abnormaility and strangeness of the front. Almost a known certainty- another place but somewhere the person knows- rather like going to "the shops"(as in local shops) as opposed to shops in general-if you forgive my bad comparison.....
