On the assumption that a single book covering all aspects, countries & fronts of WW1 is required, then I'd agree with JGM's recommendation of 1914-1918 by David Stevenson. If the person is interested only in the British Commonwealth then I'd suggest The Myriad Faces of War by Trevor Wilson.

C. Barnett, The Great War. If the reader was new to the First World War then a slim volume like this would be an excellent introduction. Highly recommended.

Best wishes,

David
