Cleaning WW1 bayonet and scabbard

You will be happy to find that your bayonet scabbard has the correct 'teardrop' shaped stud for the ww1 period.

regards.

Tom.

Not all round stud scabbards are post WW1. Economies in manufacturing processes were allowed by "List of Changes" Para 17883 of 19 November 1915 which stated that "In future manufacture scabbards.........maybe modified as follows-

Furniture A circular, instead of pear-shaped,stud fitted to the locket. Ends of locket and chape left square insted of being figured.

Leather Seam left high, also stained and waxed without high finish.

Interchangeability of components issued as spare is not affected by these modifications."

The underlining of "may" is mine - these alterations or relaxations in finish were alternatives for manufacturers and were not necessaily taken up by all from that time. Some contractors continued with the original pattern and others produced to the new standard allowed. Good photos and info on these scabbards appear in Ian Skennerton & Bob Richardson's "British and Commonwealth Bayonets".
