Marina,

is a wonderful Photoshop work. :)

Topping entries so far. I have an idea but I'd like to combine the drawing with a former battleground: anyone's got a nice colour picture with an horizon for a bit of joint work?

Marina

As Gloria says, it's done in photoshop. Take one photo of a cemetery, one of the Northumberlands at St Eloi and use the Northumberlands to 'paint' onto the cemetery.

'Ypres Daughter' said 'thats well good' she also spotted where it was without seeing the title, but then i would hope she would have been able to as she has been going there for 15 years! But she didn't say Sanctuary Wood but 'Jacques place'. will have to see what Seb says tonight when he comes in from school

"THEM and NOW"

On the left;

Gefreiter (lance corporal) from Königlich Preussisches Jägerbataillon Nr. 27, somewhere on the Riga-front (in Latvia) in 1916.

27th was formed from Finnish volunteers, who had gone to Germany to get military training, being ready for the independent Finland's. This is known in Finland as jääkäriliike.

Our soldier here is armed with Gewehr 98 rifle and a stick grenade. Also notice the jäger headgear, shako, instead of pickelhaube (the famous German spiked helmet). Steel helmet, Stahlhelm started to appear from 1916 onwards.

More information can be found for instance >here< .

On the right;

Alikersantti (corporal) from Panssarijääkärikomppania leading a squad of armour jägers, in modern day Finnish Defence Forces.

Basic weapon is an assault rifle; (in this case) 7.62 RK 62, also visible his radio (LV 110) which helps him to be in contact with platoon leader, other squads and armour.

An armoured assault vehicle BMP-2 and an anti-tank man armed with 66 KES 88 visible in the background.

Finnish Army still holds the Jäger-tradions high. The insignia (in the middle) is still used in PsjK.

Clever twist on the title, I'd never thought of that one (some say I never think at all :D ).

Another classic drawing Landsturm....

Shame I won't get to vote on this topic....

Please could I enter this poem?

Bloody Blessings

Blood-stained roses,

Waving in the dark atmosphere,

Where a mist of fear intoxicates lungs,

Choking, coughing and slowly dieing,

Faces fall to the muddy corpses at their feet.

Visions occur in front of the sorrowed eye,

pushing the truth out the trench

a letter drops to the muddy floor as the ink cries down the paper in shame.

the bright stars light up the sky as “thunder” deafens the ears.

I hope you get this my love.

You taunt and hit me,

Shaking but with not the shell-shock,

the fire of your gun kills my confidence.

This pain is immense.

It feels as if all the bones in my body are cracked.

There is no control of destiny,

however hard I will not be swayed.

Wounds may be healed in time,

but scars are carried for a lifetime.

Suddenly I’m there.

Right on the front line,

I fire, fire, fire BANG!

The trigger is pulled and he falls to the ground,

Slowly he collapses with no more than a whimper.

I tremble and stutter.

Stagger back into my bed,

Of rats and stale food.

I try to tear my filthy skin off,

Burn these monsters, these demons from my body.

Is there anything good here?

Is there any hope at all?

I seem to doubt it,

As I fall, I fall.

You have left me here with these roses beside me and a garden full of dead flowers.
