No, we're both wrong. I've just checked with the Mother site and a 2/Lt or Lt would command a Platoon, a Major or Captain would command a company.

You need to know whether his rank was substantive or acting. A substantive Second Lieutenant could easily have been made up to an Acting Captain, in which case he could command a company.
