Cnock Posted 3 October , 2005 Share Posted 3 October , 2005 Messine Ridge British Cemetery. Corporal William PITKETHLY and rifleman Fredrick BARTON, 2 Bn Royal Irish Rifles, kia 10/6/1917 On 10/6/1917 the 2 nd Bn Royal Irish Rifles had to capture the important stronghold of Ontaria Farm during the attack on Mesen. They found that the occupation of Ontario Farm had gone. The strongpoint was completely destroyed, only a big crater was left. The moral effect of the crater had been enormous, there was only isolated resistance that was quickly overcome.

Martin Felstead Posted 3 October , 2005 Share Posted 3 October , 2005 Malte, Very interesting photos of Messines. I have been there many times in the 1970s and 80s when I served in the London Scottish (G Co 1/51 Highland Vols T.A.), and the exploits of 1/14 London on 31 October 1914 when they were the first T.F. Infantry Bn in action are still celebrated every year at Hallowe'en at he HQ in London. The London Scottish survived (just) the many army reorgs since the 1990s and are now A(London Scottish) Co The London Regt TA.

frie Posted 3 October , 2005 Share Posted 3 October , 2005 Messines seen from Wulvergem??? Impossible when you are in Wulvergem you can't see this view. Picture taken in Wytschate. 80% of the picture is Wytschaete, In the background you see the church of Messines. The London Scottish were at left of the pictur ... always in Wytschaete never in Messines. The story about the London Scottish at Messines is FAKE. So this must be the Messines Ridge in Wytschate ? A ridge between Wytschaete and Messines yes... Messines has only one hill, too small to have another hill...
Cnock Posted 3 October , 2005 Share Posted 3 October , 2005 Hello, Picture post nr.38 was taken between N314 (to Wulvergem) and N365 to Ploegsteert. If You look to the right You see the Irish Tower, that is situated next to the N365. From Wijtschate (left side out of picture) You can never have this image . Regards, Cnock.
