Arthur J Posted 24 August , 2005 Share Posted 24 August , 2005 Malte Do you have any background to image No. 3? You have listed this as "Soldiers", however I notice several are holding musical instruments. On the left soldier is holding a triangle, and three in the centre of the back row, one is holding some form of stringed instrument, next appears to be a Bass, and then a fife (flute without keys). Soldier third form the left (back) may be holding a brass instrument. Going by the flowers and wine on the table they certainly appear to be celebrating. I found this pic in a cellar in Husum/North-Sea about 30 years ago. I suggest the unit could be one of german IX. Army Corps or german IX. Reserve Corps. The text in attempt to reconstruction: "M[essines in Flan]dern 3. Freund Werner [...]" The pic shows a canteen. The man sitting right of the table is the waiter. The decoration was taken just for the pic as a "souvenir". Arthur J Posted 24 August , 2005 Share Posted 24 August , 2005 Malte Thanks for your reply. From the translation " I am here a cafeteria landlord" it would appear to be a happy bunch of soldiers on R & R in the local estaminet. Looking again at the chap with the fife, he is not holding it correctly. His left hand is too close to the embouchure (mouthpiece where the player blows into), The left and right hands should be held lower down, closer to the other end of the fife. An interesting photo all the same. Thanks again

frie Posted 30 September , 2005 Share Posted 30 September , 2005 Remark to Skizze 15 - the map is 80% Wytschaete, only 11 Ldw. Brig. is in Messines... The picture no. 18 -- can't beei Messines" (near Messines). It must be Warneton or Houthem.
