Thanks for the input. He was gazzetted twice- on 4/2/18 and 8/8/18. Could the second one relate to a temporary posting to Major?

His entry in the Gazette of 8 August 1918 relates to his commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant on 31 July 1918, so the short answer is no. On first commissioning as an officer the Gazette will record his full name, subsequent promotions, permanent or temporary, will be recorded using his initials and surname so they're usually a little harder to track down, especially if he has a common surname. They will all, however, appear after the date of his initial commissioning. His appearance in the Gazette of 4 February 1918 appears to be the official record of the awarding of his MM, although it looks as though it was announced in the newspapers several months earlier.

There is a lot on his brother John in Irish Military Archives, also of Moneymore IRA

http://mspcsearch.militaryarchives.ie/detail.aspx

File relates to an unsuccessful claim by John Morris under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924. John Morris claimed service from 1918 to 1922 with the Irish Volunteers and IRA. According to references on file John Morris took part in a number of IRA operations and attacks against the British and Northern Ireland government forces. Captured in June 1922 he was interned on the prison ship S. S. Argenta until November 1923. File also relates to the unsuccessful attempts by his brother Thomas James Morris to claim in respect of the death of John Morris under the Army Pensions Acts.

very interesting! I would not have found this. Thank you
