Remembered Today:

Tank Corps - Captain Donald Fullerton Nicol

GTB

Recommended Posts

Donald was originally a Lt in the Army Cyclist Corps, later a Captain in the Tanks Corps. I have his M.I.C card, awarded the 3 basic medals. He is said to have been wounded in the chest (bullet wound) in August 1918. Other information suggests he survived the war and later died in 1932/36? He applied for his medals on the 04 11 1922. Wondering if he was at Amiens? Any other information on Donald would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

Officers Papers at TNA  https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C1068517 - sadly not digitised so a visit or researcher required

Edit: MIC as Donald Fullarton Nicol = worth looking for records with that alternative second forename, Fullarton.

Thank you very much for your help, appreciated. Not sure if his correct surname is FULLERTON or FULLARTON? It seems FULLERTON is the name used most on the relevant documentation!

Can anybody tell me if they have noticed Capt D.F Nicol on the Google Landships site. I have trawled through it many times and can't find his name, just wondering if I have missed it?

There is mention of a Captain Nicol at Villers Bretonneux here:

Villers - Brettonne Tank Corps officers

Quote

I have the book History of the 13th Tank Battalion if that helps?

Lt C J Frankenstein transferred to TC 02/01/1918 and was posted to 13th TC 08/05/1918. KIA 23/08/1918

Capt G B Black seconded to TC 21/01/1918 and was posted to 13th TC 24/01/1918. MID and DOW after action on 23/08/1918 awarded MC for advance on the Somme 08/08/1918.

They both died in the Battle of the Woods. Capt Black was liason officer at the time but due to Capt Nicol being wounded in the lead up to the battle, he stepped in and took over Nicol's section. He was killed by shell fragment returning on foot to confirm that his section had set off and were engaging the enemy.

Lt Frankenstein was killed 15 mins before Zero of the battle when a shell fragement entered the front flap of his tank and killed him and destroyed the compass. The tank did not reach the starting line as could not be driven.

This may be the same Captain Nicol?

Steve.
