Thanks Corisande, a nice summary for J T SHAUGHNESSY ... Now who has a possible 1921 Census entry to add?

And its better settled the spelling of his surname and set my mind at rest regarding a 1897 birth.

Tower Hamlets have a part list for 1920 only, and a quick search for surname 'SHAUG*' shows nothing.

Quite right.
Nothing more than ' 34317 Pte. D. of Corn.L.I.  '

Thanks for looking - and at the MR even though we probably both knew it was a slim chance of success.

If you read that snippet I posted above from his service record, he himself to to Government to say he was born in 1897

Address seems to be 194 St Leonard's Rd, Poplar E14 - I wonder if this matches or links to his Army SR??

The noted Army Service Record helpfully shows this seaman, James Thomas SHAUGHNESSY, is our person of interest as it shows the same address.  It also shows that he was a [Ship's] Sea Cook before he joined the Army.

Note for Carina. - If you haven't subscription access to Ancestry it is quite commonly possible to access for free via a UK public library so as to see his SR [as I have just done!]

His SR record is a wealth of other info about his Army service.

Edit: Also be aware that his Army service record is also likely to be at Find My Past - typically with better clarity.  Try https://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/results?sourcecategory=armed+forces+%26+conflict&sid=101&firstname=james+thomas&firstname_variants=true&lastname=shaughnessy&yearofbirth=1897&yearofbirth_offset=1&soldiernumber=34317&keywordsplace_proximity=5&sourcecountry=great+britain - free trial & short membership is possible and some libraries might offer access too.

Hi

Just been reading this thread, and it seems to be very special. We now have the children of ww1 veterans who are asking us, forum members for information about their parents which is an honour, They are asking these question now probably because their parents didn't want to talk about the war to them.

Regards

Andy

We can also add that in 1901 the family were living at the same address, or at least in the same street, with father James very much alive. Looking at the age of the youngest child in the 1911 census, who is aged 5, this suggests that father James died sometime after 1905. I'm not seeing a likely death for a James Shaughnessy in this time frame, but there is this death of a 49-year old James O'Shaughnessy registered in Poplar in the second quarter of 1908 that would fit both location and age-wise based on his stated age in the 1901 England and Wales census.

O'SHAUGHNESSY, JAMES         49

Looking at the births of the younger children, Anne's maiden name was Donaghy

Wouldn’t this thread be better by being split into two separate ones?
The original topic was regarding surviving children of WW1 veterans but has morphed into in-depth (and pretty good) biographical research regarding Pte Shaugnessy.

Regarding Mancpal’s post, I am eternally grateful to Corisande, Tawhiri and Matlock for the information they have provided about my Dad.  It will enable me to make my own enquiries and their time and trouble are much appreciated.

  • 2 months later...

My mother died 4 years ago , but was the daughter of an RFC veteran. He was 51 when she was born but he died 18 months later so she never remembered anything about him. Although not ww1 my grandfather's maternal grandfather was a British Army veteran, born in 1800. He was 58 when my grandfather's mother was born.
