ErnieNoakes Posted 3 May , 2005 Author Share Posted 3 May , 2005 Ernie wasnt there a VC winner, if i remember his statue is outside the Library in Walsall, well it was about 15 years ago, could you tell his story?? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Nigel, JH Carless VC is the only individual listed in the VC section of the Walsall Roll of Honour (WW1) John Henry Carless (born in Walsall 11th November 1896) was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was 21 years old, and a Ordinary Seaman in the Royal Navy during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 17 November 1917 at the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight, Germany, Ordinary Seaman Carless of HMS Caledon, although mortally wounded in the abdomen, still went on serving his gun (at which he was acting as rammer) and helping to clear away the casualties. He collapsed once, but got up again and cheered on the new gun's crew. He then fell and died. He not only set a very inspiring example, but while mortally wounded continued to do effective work against the enemy. He is commemorated on a memorial outside the Library in his home town of Walsall (The inscription reads that he 'set an inspiring and memorable example'.) and on the Naval Memorial at Portsmouth. After his death a street in Walsall was re-named after him and another after the ship in which he served. Regards, Ernie
