Remembered Today:

The soldiers' handwriting?

Augustin

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I was able to save some "writings" of British soldiers in a wall that was about to collapse in a farm near Abeele. I would like to know if there is any possibility of finding the names or information of these soldiers (I was able to find one who died at the Battle of Ypres). Any information is welcome, thank you.

I think possibly = Rupert Stanley HARRIS [436221] https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B4095-S008 4th Bn - France, 3/8/15 [Pages 4 & 7 for a start - though the date might refute this] ???

M

Edit: here's the LAC search https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/list.aspx?SurnameSearch=harris&GivenNameSearch=R*+S*& - the others seem to have enlisted too late.  I'll leave browsing for now

Nicholas HALL, 241871, 1st/4th Royal Welsh Fusiliers

https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/591771/n-hall - Died 3 Sept 1918 Body concentrated from 57c.U.26.a.80.40 [North of Rancourt it seems Geo. coords: 50.010897, 2.915287]. Buried Combles Communal Cemetery - Mrs S Hall, General Delivery, Vancouver, British Colombia on headstone schedule - this would appear to synch with a widow's pension/alternative pension claim [KiA] for a Sarah HALL, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Likely Marriage Marriages Jun 1914

Crook Sarah Hall Chorley 8e 1239

Hall Nicholas Crook Chorley 8e 1239

IWM LOTFWW https://livesofthefirstworldwar.iwm.org.uk/lifestory/1522540 - has birth as Chorley - died age 32 which would seem to match Births Sep 1886 Hall Nicholas  Chorley 8e 534 - a photo in civilian clothes, possibly a wedding photo, provided [primary source not identified]

= There seems to be a SDGW entry which may clarify a few details

= Worth looking for a Register of Soldiers' Effects entry for benificiary(ies) [I didn't find a Will] and War Gratuity [May help with approx. enlistment date]

MIC = BWM & VM

Hello everyone! Thanks again for your remarkable research work. I revisited the site today and there are still about twenty markings to be saved. I'll keep the forum informed.

Hello,
I've revisited the site and obtained permission to remove the inscriptions. I'll know more at the end of the week.
ps: a photo of a particularly well-preserved inscription

George Roberts 201002, previously 8365 Royal Welsh Fusiliers, seems to have survived the war.
Arrived France 4th Sept. 1915.

I wonder if @Hywyn has anything on him?

Edit: I can't see him on the North Wales Absent Voters' Lists, but I'm guessing Denbighshire which was the centre for recruitment of the 4th (TF) Battalions of the RWF.
