Remembered Today:

Armenac Kemkemian - Interpreter

Hi Eran,

Thanks for your reply. It's more the case that I have expended the small amount of information that I have on interpreters.

From a metaphysical angle, there is the debate of why have certain records survived (spoiler: legal or accounting reasons), and what were the circumstances that resulted in others being discarded (spoiler: no legal or accounting reason to retain said records.) There are debates that loop eternally, such as the Red Cross having the kind of realtime military intelligence capacity in Flanders 1914 that Bellingcat can only dream of! This theory arose on a thread on here a while back and I have no appetite for debates that can go down this kind of route.

There is no need to apologise, you have not been pushy. I have wanted to be definitive regarding (1) the small knowledge I had on locally hired interpreters, and (2) providing a monologue as to what records have survived and why.

I suspect that you have already done the following, but you may want to expand your Armenian research to the aforementioned Armenian troops in French service within the Détachement Français de Palestine et de Syrie. Their names of the fallen should be appearing on the French sources of (1) the memoiredeshommes website (of the French ministere de la defense) which presents the index cards of the deceased, with its information similar to that of Soldiers who Died in the Great War for British Army fatalities, and (2) the excellent not-for-profit and crowdsourced memorialgenweb which I consider to be akin to the CWGC find war dead database
https://www.memorialgenweb.org/memorial3/html/fr/index.php

(I see this as the parallel of the (1) SDGW and (2) CWGC info that is available on the sons of Israel who - like the Armenians - fought and died for the Entente, albeit in the battalions of the Jewish Legion within the London Regiment.

On that note, I bid you adieu, an wish you well with your ongoing Armenian research.

All the best
Keith

Mate,

Yes I could not find how they were recriuted in any records, so when checking I found most were from what was called the Egyptian Interpreters, also called the Corps of Interpreters Egyptian

They were recriuted for the Army and given to the AIF in 1915 for use in Egypt but some show up at Gallipoli, I am still unsure how many did go to the landing or stayed in Egpyt?

But they continued to be attached to us during the war and many passed threw the units during the war.

So the mention now of a Corps of Guilds, and Indian Army, threw me as no one even mentions this group?

So how many were in what group is hard to confirm, sorry

As stated I have many Jews and other mixed into these but as the are no enlistment docs its no that easy.

Good Luck and Bon Chance

Thanks Steve,

There are at least 3 certain Jewish names on that list of yours: Attar, Boustany and Habib.

No surprise - The Jewish Community in Egypt is ancient and in addition - there were many deportees from Palestine in Alexandria.

Mate,

Just to add there enlistment s shown numbers start with " K/L " for the Corps of Guides and Interpreters Indian Army

What that means I have not found out as most just give a number not letters as

ATTIGRI    JM    K/L 758    Interpreter    Egyptian Army    Interpreter Corps of Guides and Interpreters Indian Army att Stafford Yeo buried The old Greek Cemetery Jerusalem and commemorated in Ramleh

Epstein    Simon    K/L 1086    Interpreter    Egyptian Army    interpreter EEF

But again not confirmed Epstein was in the Corps of Guides and Interpreters Indian Army or Egyptian Interpreters?

Cheers

Well, seems that these letters, KL, are connected to the interpreters. We still need to verify this.

Simon Epstein is as Jewish it can get...

Keith has already drawn attention to those medal rolls, including those indexed by Ancestry as Malta Artillery even though they have nothing to do with this.

Here's another sample page from Ancestry/National Archives:

41629_611411_5820-00416.jpg.c557da707bddb6697664bbbc267dd747.jpg

There is a mass of intriguing info in just one page!

But I note that the medals seem to have been issued in 1930s so there is a possibility of a file somewhere all about these late claims?? Maybe in the Foreign Office files at National Archives? Just a thought.

All,

I corresponded earlier today with Yigal Sheffy who published this book: British Military Intelligence in the Palestine Campaign 1914-1918 (London, 1998). Yigal (Then Dr., later Prof.) did know about the Corps of Guides and Interpreters. He was surprised to hear from me that they are associated with the Indian Army, which takes us back to that note by GWF member Green Acorn (Hendo) who mentioned something about that on the old thread about the Interpreter Corps.

I sent a PM to Hendo on that, and hope he'll return to me.

However, this is what Yigal Sheffy wrote about the EEF Corps: "... the Guides' and Interpreters' Corps, established in mid-1917, specialised in guiding the patrols and raids. Led by British officers, it consisted initially of local Bedouin, Sudanese scouts, and former Armenian prisoners-of-war, and later mostly of Palestinian Arabs and Jews who were recruited for the dual capacity of guide and interpreter and allocated one to a regiment for the purpose of interrogating prisoners, including Germans, and enabling officers to communicate with the local inhabitants".

In a footnote, these references are mentioned: WO 95/4361: GHQ EEF to WO, No. ER 950, 10 March 1918; WO 24/916: War Establishment No. 871, 'Guides' and Interpreters' Corps', Dec. 1917; WO 24/928: War Establishment No. 204/331, 'Guides' and Interpreters' Corps', Nov. 1918; Ernest Hammond, History of the 11th Light Horse Regiment (Brisbane, 1942), p. 104

Thank you, Charlie!

The majority of these people were recruited during 1917-1918, which fits the info given by Yigal Sheffy (Post above). The registration (Service) numbers are mostly marked as KL, or just a number. I guess that some of these on this page were sent to other theaters of war, and maybe that explains that indeed strange definition of 'Malta Artillery'...

I agree with you - A mass of intriguing info. Would love go to through all these files!

Eran,

As to Hammond I show at lest two men who were Interpreters with the 11 LHR

RIYAD    S    N/R    Interpreter    Egyptian Army    interpreter 11 LHR AMD
ZELONKA    SH    N/R    Interpreter    Egyptian Army    att Interpreter RHQ/11 LHR to disch 12-18 (War diary) (not identified)

But who he's talking about is so far unknown

Mate,

Just to add

I notice that there are two such letters in the Egyptian part

There numbers prefixed by the letter "L" is for the Intelligence Corps, like

HAGOPIAN    V    L 515    Interpreter    Egyptian Army    interpreter NZEF 10-17 to 11-18 (Armenian)

It appears that some of these were used for Interpreter work as above

The other I have mentioned as "K/L" is for the Corps of Guides and Interpreters Indian Army

But as stated most have just a number, or no number at all.

The documents found by the boys are great, and puts flesh to the bones.

Thanks Steve,

Indeed, these documents do make things more personal and 'alive'!

I too noticed the different letters for some and the lack of letters or even numbers for others. However, I want to return to the units themselves.

It seems that the official name of this unit is the Corps of Guides and Interpreters. This appears clearly in the detailed report of the EEF that Michael pointed at and also in Prof. Yigal Sheffy's book I quoted. You relate to the Egyptian Army, but I think you mentioned that it was not written as such, and it's more of an assumption. If I understand correctly, you assume that a part was recruited under the Egyptian Army and another part under the Indian Army. Now, the Indian Army is definitely used by the CWGC records (4 Dead) but it remains a bit vague if it's correct or not. Prof. Sheffy was very surprised to see this and he never crossed this connection before. GWF member Green Acorn (Hendo) made an interesting remark on that in the past, but it remains an unclear issue. I'll try to get to the relevant WO records and clear this issue. At this moment, I assume that this is a glitch in the CWGC (Then IWGC), however, based on something or someone way back then.

The other interpreter buried in the Holy Land (Jerusalem, commemorated Ramleh), J. M. ATTIRGI, triggers another mystery, as to the identity of the unit he belonged to, but I think I'll start a new topic on that at the Soldiers or their units sub-forum.

There were two Indian infantry units which served in the EEF and had names which (as they included the word 'Guides') may be adding to the confusion here;

21st Infantry Brigade [7th (Indian) Division – landed in Egypt, January 1918]
1st Guides Infantry

and

180th Brigade [60th Division]

2nd Guides Infantry [began to arrive in April 1918*]

The "Corps of Guides and Interpreters" seems to have already been established before either of these units arrived in this theatre

Edit * the 2nd Guides Infantry were still in training at Tell el Kebir on 3rd July 1918 and had another two weeks training to go -  see footnote p.419, of Part II of the OH Egypt & Palestine June 1917 to the end of the War

OK.

I started to write this over 12 hours ago but had to go out, so I'm back to this only now. In the meanwhile, Michael wrote something which is connected, but please bear with me.

As mentioned above - I searched CWGC records for the rank 'interpreter' in Israel and Palestine and came up with 2 names: Armenac KEMKEMIAN & J. M. ATTIRGI.

J. M. ATTIRGI unit is recorded as Queen Victoria's Own Corps of Guides Cavalry (F.F.) (Lumsden's). The next search was to see how many dead are in the CWGC records of this unit in Israel and Palestine and came up with 3 results.

As far as I know, Queen Victoria's Own Corps of Guides (F.F.) (Lumsden's) is the full name of units more commonly known as The Guides (Infantry) and The Guides (Cavalry). Again, as far as I know, The Guides (Cavalry) never got to this theatre of war (remained in Mesopotamia), while The Guides (Infantry) had 2 battalions operating here. I already mentioned above that The Guides (Infantry) 1st Battalion was in action in this theatre of war for a longer period of time, involved in two major actions: The Capture of the Sisters (June 8th, 1918) and The Battle of Sharon (September 19th, 1918). The Guides (Infantry) 2nd Battalion (a new battalion) finished their training just before the Megiddo Offensive and participated in The Battle of Sharon (September 19th, 1918).

So, the next search was to find how the deads of The Guides (Infantry) in this country are recorded in the CWGC records. It's under Queen Victoria's Own Corps of Guides Infantry (F.F.) (Lumsden's). There are 14 names under this unit's name, some of the 1st Battalion (5), some of the 2nd Battalion (4), and a few without mention of the battalion (5, all except 1 can be identified as of the 1st Battalion, including British Officers).

Back to the Queen Victoria's Own Corps of Guides Cavalry (F.F.) (Lumsden's). Went through the full details of all 3 names - 2 of them are recorded as of the 1st Battalion and have infantry ranks (Not cavalry!). As The Guides (Cavalry) were never in this theatre of war, the natural conclusion is that this is a mistake in the IWGC/CWGC records and these two dead (Sepoy Aulia KHAN & Naik AIJAL) should be included in the records of the dead of the Queen Victoria's Own Corps of Guides Infantry (F.F.) (Lumsden's).  The third name there is Interpreter J. M. ATTIRGI, and in his case, it seems that there is a double mistake: The first one was associating him with Queen Victoria's Own Corps of Guides Cavalry (F.F.) (Lumsden's). My guess is that he was recruited to the Corps of Guides and Interpreters and someone made a mistake due to the word 'Guides'. This is supported by the fact that ATTRIGI was attached to the Staffordshire Yeomanry, just as other members of the Corps of Guides and Interpreters were attached to various cavalry regiments & infantry battalions. The second mistake is that he is identified as an Indian war dead. Seems that this is another mistake in the IWGC/CWGC records that has to be corrected - the Corps of Guides and Interpreters had no connection to the Indian Army and therefore the unit we find in the records, Corps of Guides and Interpreters, Indian Army is simply wrong. the casualties of this Corps were Natives, not Indian (not a single Indian in the lists we saw so far).

Not where, other then the four dead, mention Indian Army?

Yes,

Most just show EEF with no comments.

So weather there CofGI is unknown

MELIKIAN     DA    N/R    Interpreter    Egyptian Army    interpreter EEF
MELIKIAN     J. John    N/R    Interpreter    Egyptian Army    interpreter EEF
MIKHAIL     Zakhari     N/R    Interpreter    Egyptian Army    interpreter EEF
MIKHAIL     Tewfik    N/R    Interpreter    Egyptian Army    interpreter EEF
MIKHAIL     Zaki    N/R    Interpreter    Egyptian Army    interpreter EEF

PS

I notice the NAA (National Archives of Australia has a file on his man

RIAD or MORCOS    Morcos or Riad    457    Interpreter    Egyptian Army    interpreter att Headquarters Base Commandant to (14 AGH) hosp (Pyrexia) 3-18 rtn 4-18

The BNA has him as Riad Morcos while the NAA has him as Morcos Riad

shown in British records as EEF, while the Aussie records give the details shown and he is mentioned as a Christian but not what country?

There is a card for Selim Spiridon, 1119 KL, Cl(ass) 2 Clerk Grade 1, Corps of Guides & Interpreters, applied for his BWM/VM in 1924 - address in Jerusalem. Surname suggests Greek descent.

Another card for KL1112 Interpreter J Somerville, no medals noted.

Mate,

Yes the best we can find so far is the many such men recruited by the British in Egypt/Palestine seams to be called "Corps of Guides and Interpreters"

That they appear to be in to types, that being the Guides and Interpreters and or Intell Corps

Of cause its still all to play for, but that's the best we can confirm, how they put in Indian Army can only be sumised, that they got mixed up with the Indian Regt of the same name

Steve,
that's a very impressive list for this almost unheard of unit, and I have no doubt it is the result long hours of work; can you say what documents you have based this on?

regards, Michael

Yes, its mined from many documents, including those mentioned in the comments above (better detailed then most sources), also unit war diaries and RO's for AIF members and lastly the Medal index Cards to check the above names.

The Spelling of some names in many records, are what they wrote, so if there off its due to that.

The unit has gone through a number of corrections and since we settled on the Corps of Guilds and Interpreters EEF, I am happy with that, until a better idea comes along

I could go into the names a bit more, like some are clearly Jewish, but I didn't put that as I could find no document to support that.

I hope its of some help to anyone

S.B
