AFO191519 Posted 6 June , 2023 Share Posted 6 June , 2023 (edited) Hi everyone, Does anyone have any information on Brigadier General A. B. Hamilton, who arrived in Salonika on 1 October 1915 to supervise the Allied landings. He is mentioned in Falls' Official History, p.40, but with no details. According to the US Consul in Salonika, his full name was Angus Bruce Hamilton, brother of General Ian Hamilton:Papers Relating to the Foreign Relations of the United States The consul states that he supervised the Allied landing at Moudros, but I have not found anything about this in Aspinall-Oglander's Official History. I would like to know more about his career and why he was chosen as the first senior officer sent to Salonika. apwright Posted 16 June , 2023 Share Posted 16 June , 2023 The US Consul was mistaken. The Brig.-Gen. A.B. Hamilton who came to Salonika was not Angus Bruce, but The Hon. Alexander Beamish Hamilton CB (1860-1918), brother of Brig-Gen William George Hamilton. He had been Embarkation Commandant at Southampton from 1914. Some info in this earlier thread...https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/269277-brigadier-general-hon-sir-alexander-beamish-hamilton/ The US Consul was not the only one to be confused about his identity. For a while the Greeks were under the misapprehension that they were negotiating with Sir Ian. Adrian
AFO191519 Posted 16 June , 2023 Author Share Posted 16 June , 2023 Hi, Many thanks for your reply. I must have misused the search function and missed the previous topic... If he had already worked as Embarkation Commandant at Southampton and the Dardanelles, it is not surprising that he was sent to Salonika to plan the Allied landings. 1 hour ago, apwright said: The US Consul was not the only one to be confused about his identity. Yes, apparently when Venizelos heard about the General's arrival in Salonika, he thought it was Ian Hamilton, which sent him into a rage.
