The medal rolls list 3 instances of 18069 MGC, but none are Davis.

There are tantalising glimpses of letters underneath his, I can see AMR?? under DAV. Is there anything else visible.
After a crude attempt to erase the original recipient's name, his name is engraved on the rim, not impressed.
Such is the nature of self awards.

would a policeman make this up

I suppose once a deception has started, it sustains a momentum of its own, and inevitably requires further deception down the line to maintain the secret.

i guessed B as Bernard as I could think of any other name

up came Harry Bernard David he went overseas 5/11/18 MGC. Number 180609 so he changed one digit …probably so he did t get caught out ? You should always keep fibs simple …he had enlisted in 1916

No, he attested that day. Doesn't look as though he went overseas.

Aged 39. Separated from wife.

In the record the date 24/4/16 is recorded as the enlistment date. Maybe he was in a reserved occupation?

Also mentioned is 15/5/18 [From whom received "Ministry of National Service M.B."
