Allan1892 Posted 3 May , 2023 Share Posted 3 May , 2023 Never seen this before. A quick search on Mr Google brought up a number of images with this clasp, I have attached one of the images, awarded to #5967 H Walker of the Coldstream Guards. One more image which adds a little about the soldier.

I think the query is that the OP example appears to be a “slide on” type of bar with metal also visible to the rear of the ribbon. I can’t see any holes on the face of the bar that could facilitate attachment by sewing. I’ve not seen that type of bar previously. Steve
arantxa Posted 3 May , 2023 Author Share Posted 3 May , 2023 Hello it was but i am very very grateful to Allan for all the info..which i didnt know Thank you no holes what so ever its a bit like a tie clip
peregrinvs Posted 3 May , 2023 Share Posted 3 May , 2023 I would assume it was a tailors copy of some sort. AFAIK original issued clasps to the 1914 Star were only stitched on with a hole in each corner. https://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/ww1_1914_mons_star_bars.htm
TullochArd Posted 3 May , 2023 Share Posted 3 May , 2023 (edited) It's certainly a rare item. The slip on/slider style clasp is regularly seen on miniatures which are, as you know, all private purchase items. This full size version is identical in construction. This leads me to believe it is more probably a genuine post War commercial tailors item produced for sale rather than some sort of fake. It smacks of practicality rather than intent to deceive. Nice. (GWF Chum welshdoc, way back in 2007, mentions similar and tells us "The other types are sliders which slide onto the ribbon these are what many call tailors copies. Can be very good but are not original.") Edited 3 May , 2023 by TullochArd GWF Chum welshdoc .......
arantxa Posted 3 May , 2023 Author Share Posted 3 May , 2023 Thank you …yes it seems more practical than sewing as I guess the bar was sent separately and you had to see it on yourself
58 Div Mule Posted 5 May , 2023 Share Posted 5 May , 2023 I’ve seen these ‘slide on’ clasps on a number of occasions. They’re often described as tailor’s copies. It’s always struck me that the original sewn on clasp was an unsatisfactory design and many must have been lost or become detached over the years. I’m guessing that the slide on bar was the preferred option for some of those who had a clasp to replace? I also suspect that a few ‘old soldiers’ liked to embellish their awards too! 58 DM. Looks to be GV era so he earned it prior to 1935. Where is the evidence he was wearing those medals during us time as a volunteer in the Special Constabulary? There is an equal amount of evidence ie none that he “made up” his “achievements” after his voluntary Police service had ended whilst in a purely civilian employment.
