I read the document as Joseph McNiven NELSON RE (he signs his name as Mc) I know of 5 Great War Joseph NELSON Royal Engineers.  Also named are Robert Ferguson and Fred Metcalfe of the same unit ....... nice story with likely GWF potential ...... albeit back from 1922 .....more to follow

...... you are a mine of information Charlie .......  Pigeon Service 1918!  Enlighten me how we have moved from a civil document relating to a marriage in 1922 but supporting evidence from a declared union in November 1918.

Yours "Bamboozled"

Born 17/2/1896 per the French cert but gave his age as 19y6m when attesting Aug 1914.

Could he have had an English marriage that then was formally registered in France? (Edit- see later post)

I'll go with that Charlie.  Thanks for your thoughts.

 Not there.

Looking at medal roll I see his 14/15 Star has him as 1358 Driver, 1st Highland Bde RFA. Entry France 2/5/15.

His service record is damaged and hard to follow. The BWM/VM roll makes sense.

There's an intriguing annotation. His medals were found 1940 at Dunkirk Evacuation!

It very much looks the same but how come we are looking at a civil document relating to a marriage in 1922 but supporting evidence from a declared union in November 1918 ........ ?

Cert is dated 14 Dec 1918.

The 22 is 2022!!

Even so a slight date dif.

I think there might have been a church bit 30/11/18 but the legal bit at the Mairie was 14/12/18. Separation of church and state!

Doh!  2022 it is ...... but in my defence I did declare my French as 'très terrible'........however I'll now revise that assessment to 'incroyablement mauvais'

Well, this now gets very interesting. Following up on that medal roll annotation of his medals being found at Evacuation of Dunkirk, here is what was going on.

This from Aberdeen Press 4/7/1940.

There's a good book on WW2 Resistance by a teenage lad whose father was a CWGC cemetery manager and interned. I read it a couple of years back. Must look up the name ..(edit..Stephen Grady - excellent story).
