The Muster Rolls were held for each Company and all started with the number 1. The Stammrolle register (see attached) was divided up alphabetically and the number could then be used to access the service record entry. Charlie Thanks Charlie2, I’m surprised that a more useful numbering system wasn’t used, but then again the British regimental numbering was far from perfect back then.
