No, not in the sense that we know from the British Army, they had a Stammrollen number - a number on the Muster Roll - which was more often than not stamped on their ID disc. The Muster Rolls were held for each Company and all started with the number 1. The Stammrolle register (see attached) was divided up alphabetically and the number could then be used to access the service record entry.

Thanks Charlie2, I’m surprised that a more useful numbering system wasn’t used, but then again the British regimental numbering was far from perfect back then.
