Holger Kotthaus Posted 6 February Share Posted 6 February (edited) Let me come back to original background of the `Two Captured Turkish 4,7 inch Guns´. Original Source: https://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/awm-media/collection/P01668.003/screen/3999546.JPG Photo Caption: “GAZA, PALESTINE, C. 1917-12. MEMBERS OF THE 3RD LIGHT HORSE FIELD AMBULANCE BESIDE A CAPTURED TURKISH ARTILLERY PIECE. THE THREE MEN STANDING IN FRONT OF THE GUN HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM A NEARBY WELL, WHERE THEY HAVE FILLED UP THEIR WATER BOTTLES. THE SOLDIER STANDING AT FAR LEFT IS SERGEANT DUDLEY MACAULAY. (DONOR: B. L'ESTRANGE)“ Source: https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C254305 I would like to try to find the location where both Turkish 4.7 inch guns were captured. Can anyone help me with the dates above, where and when the 3rd Light Horse was deployed, or whether the capture of the guns is mentioned in the records? Holger Kotthaus Posted 6 February Share Posted 6 February Is it possible that we are talking about the same weapons in this extended topic too? . . . Artillery Battery for coastal defense . . . on the Syrian cost? https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/306643-german-artillery-battery-for-coastal-defense-at-ajar-on-the-syrian-cost/page/2/#comment-3239711 The following facts speak for this: 1. The same time-period; - Early November 1917 2. The same location; - in the Gaza area on the coast 3. In both cases there are two unidentified, rare long-range guns. 4. The non-mention in Turkish and Austrian sources because they are not a Turkish-German- or Austrian-, but a British-construction? domsim Posted 8 February Share Posted 8 February The War diary for the 3rd Light Horse regt. mentions the capture of 2 abandoned guns on the 11th November 1917-found during a recce towards Beit Duras by Lt McBride and brought into Esdud by teams of horses from the Inverness Battery. Typically they are part of 18th Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery, and the only missing war diary for the the brigade is November 1917 and there doesn't appear to be a war diary for the Inverness Battery! Of course these might not be the guns you are interested in. From the Australian War Mermorial website. All the best Dom.

Dom, your time information in particular corresponds to the time frame in the IWM. Quote . . . Afterwards mounted on a primitive land carriage - captured in the "drive" from Gaza and Beersheba, commenced 26th October 1917 and culminating in the capture of Jerusalem 11th December 1917.
