Hello,

I am trying to determine the exact uniform of a Scottish soldier in the Cameron Highlanders of Canada. Can you help me. I don't think there is a kilt.

Thank you.

Augustin

Googling leads to many images of various periods, including that of the Great War, of the Cameron Highlanders and nearly all show them to be kilted. The exceptions are of soldiers in modern battle-dress.

Hello,

To assist in searching, during the Great War, there was the 43rd Cameron Highlanders of Canada Est. 1 Apr 1910 and post war re-designated The Cameron Highlanders of Canada on 15 Mar 1920.  They are now The Queens Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and are a Primary Infantry Reserve Regiment.(https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/services/military-history/history-heritage/official-military-history-lineages/lineages/infantry-regiments/queens-own-cameron-highlanders.html

And specifically their Great War history; https://thequeensowncameronhighlandersofcanada.net/regiment/the_great_war.html .

When searching, you’ll want to look for the 43rd Cameron Highlanders of Canada.

Hope that helps.

Jim

thank you for the information

The best person to address this matter is I think @gordon92 who started a thread on the complicated subject of Canadian Scottish regiments here:

https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/247347-canadian-highland-battalions-badges-insignia-dress/  (see photo of 43rd soldier in British SD near the bottom of page one).

It should be remembered that these were not regular regiments and in many cases uniforms evolved as the material to make them became available.  I enclose two images of 43rd Cameron Highlanders of Canada taken at home in Canada (and so presumably men of the 79th there) wearing the uniforms of Canadian pattern used prior to the issue of British service dress.

The pre-War 79th Regiment Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada was the main source of recruits for the following Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) battalions: 43rd, 174th, and 179th.  Of these only the 43rd served with the Canadian Corps in France.  The other two battalions provided drafts of men to reinforce the 43rd in the field, and they were eventually subsumed into reserve battalions. All three battalions wore uniforms similar to the Imperial Cameron Highlanders.  Some uniform notes are indicated below:

Jacket: Either the 5 button British pattern service dress jacket or the Canadian manufactured 7 button jacket.  Manufacture of the latter ceased in 1917, but examples were seen throughout the War.

Headdress: Glengarry, solid blue, with cap badge.  This was supplanted by the Tam O'Shanter in 1915.

Cap badge;

Collar badge:

Shoulder title: A plain CANADA title of various configurations was used sometimes surmounted with a 43.  It is possible that a C over 43 title appeared late in the war, but I have never seen photographic evidence of this.

Nice piece of kilt

Can anyone advise me? I would like to buy a 79th Cameron Highlanders of Canada kilt, for mannequin and re-enactment.
Thank you very much.

Augustin.
