thedawnpatrol Posted 22 November , 2021 Share Posted 22 November , 2021 I have a 1914-15 star and War medal to Captain Gerald Davies. the star is stamped 2. Lieut G Davies ASC, but the War Medal is stamped Captain G Davies RFC please explain why it's RFC and not RAF ? I've also seen some other RFC medals with no Regiment stated..... RNCVR Posted 22 November , 2021 Share Posted 22 November , 2021 He had active service in the RFC before the RAF was formed.
charlie962 Posted 22 November , 2021 Share Posted 22 November , 2021 As RNCVR implies it is possible he did not serve abroad any longer when the RAF was formed in 1918 ? He was attached to 52 Squadron 23/1/17 and was an Observer rather than Pilot. He returned home from 52 Squdn 15/8/17. charlie962 Posted 22 November , 2021 Share Posted 22 November , 2021 (edited) There's a good possible photo of your man recuperating at Hillington Hall, in the Tatler courtesy FindmyPast Newspapers. This man wears observers wings sand given the date it fits well. Perhaps your man had a serious health problem, his Service Record is held by national Archives but needs a visit to see it. Davis with the stick on the nurse's right EDIT- this photo was subject of a thread here by @Madmeg and @PRC found some info on him- see page 3 of that old thread. It confirms he was permanently unfit. Charlie Edited 22 November , 2021 by charlie962

Charlie Ah just thinking about this Chap, perhaps he was invalided out after a spell in hospital and so as he did not serve in the RAF as you say, may be why there is no Victory medal for the end of the war? ss002d6252 Posted 24 November , 2021 Share Posted 24 November , 2021 I agree George, the card shows that the BWM and VM were issued in 1922. Craig
