keithmroberts Posted 4 December , 2023 Author Share Posted 4 December , 2023 Thanks Maureen three winners there, but I can't find that the Green Howards participated in the campaign, although one battalion was sent direct to Russia soon afterwards. MaureenE Posted 5 December , 2023 Share Posted 5 December , 2023 @keithmroberts Keith, I did see in the Foreword page vii of The Green Howards in the Great War, that there were a few words that there were officers and men of the Regiment fighting in the Balkans, but on a closer look, I agree with you that there is nothing further in the book to indicate this was so. Sorry about that. Maureen
MaureenE Posted 16 January Share Posted 16 January Some more online histories which have been mentioned in another post. These I noted had service in Salonika History of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, Volume 3, in the Great War 1914-1918 by Lt.-Col. Reginald C Bond 1929. keithmroberts Posted 16 January Author Share Posted 16 January Thanks again Maureen. All links now added, as is the volume on KOYLI in which amazingly the 3 years service of a regular battalion is covered in just 10 pages. That may well be the shortest report of three years service in a theatre of war for a 1st Battalion. Keith
MaureenE Posted 4 February Share Posted 4 February @keithmroberts, mentioned in a recent post, with service in Salonika History of the East Surrey Regiment Volume 2 1914-1917 by Colonel H W Pearse and Brigadier-General H S Sloman 1923 https://archive.org/details/histeastsurreyregimentvol2/page/n7/mode/2up History of the East Surrey Regiment Volume 3 1917-1919 by Colonel H W Pearse and Brigadier-General H S Sloman 1924 https://archive.org/details/histeastsurreyregimentvol3/page/n9/mode/2up The History of the Suffolk Regiment 1914-1927 by Lieut.-Colonel C C R Murphy 1928 https://archive.org/details/historysuffolkregimentmurphy/page/n9/mode/2up Maureen
keithmroberts Posted 4 February Author Share Posted 4 February (edited) Thank you Maureen, I had included the titles, but can now add the links, that is really good. For other possible events I purchased the Suffolk book a few months ago, but I do look forward to reading the East Surrey one, especially volume 2. MaureenE Posted 5 March Share Posted 5 March @keithmroberts (Keith, you know of the first one). Click on the (copied) links. The Story of the 6th Service Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in the Great War [British Army] By: Printed by Wm Trimble at the "Impartial Reporter" Office, Enniskillen Only 2 pages, if that is of interest "With the Twenty-Second". A History of the Twenty-Second Battalion, A. I. F. [1919, Australian Imperial Force] By: Captain E Gorman (Eugene). A detachment of pack-drivers served in Salonika, pages 107-108. Sorry I couldn't change the font size. Maureen
sanctuarywood Posted 5 March Share Posted 5 March I understand the bibliography is focused on books, but you may be interested in an article published in Aussie: The Australian Soldiers' Magazine on 15 February 1921. Kathleen Ussher wrote "The War Wanderings of an Aussie Girl" as an account of her wartime experience with the Scottish Women's Hospitals in Salonika and, subsequently, with the Women’s Royal Naval Service in Gibraltar. Throughout her life Ussher was, at various times, an illustrator, author, civil servant, hospital orderly, and Hollywood journalist. I don't have access to the actual article at present, but I've included one of her illustrations, scanned from microfilm at the National Archives of Australia. The illustration was captioned “When the Navy withdrew to a dry place at sea”.
keithmroberts Posted 5 March Author Share Posted 5 March (edited) Thanks for this, I have set the policy as "items published in English", and am now adding references ( and where possible) links, to articles in journals and other similar publications. It would be helpful to be able to add the length of the article, but this looks to be a useful addition to the bibliography, thank you. Now to find out whether the magazine has been digitised anywhere. I should add that initially I ploughed through the bibliographic references in my own Salonika reading, and then checked out a few other titles in the Bodley, and then add others thanks to suggestions, especially from MaureenE who set me off on this track but also from other GWF members, and members of the Salonika Campaign Society. This last year I have investigated quite a number of regimental histories, and they will be included in the next update which is due in September. MaureenE Posted 19 March Share Posted 19 March @keithmroberts A title for you to investigate which appears to include some Salonika content, but I don't know how much. Unfortunately although a digital file exits, it is Searchable only (should be available full view in USA in about 8 years https://books.google.com/books?id=krHGRFfw32AC ) The title is The City of London Yeomanry (Roughriders) / A. S. Hamilton/ 1936 His papers are at IWM and are described in https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/1030002030 Private Papers of Major A S Hamilton MM ...service as an NCO with the City of London Yeomanry, November 1912 - March 1917, ...Salonika, November 1916 - March 1917; His full name is probably Arthur Sidney Hamilton. Regarding the SCS Bibliography I noticed the Hammond book A Living Witness could have an online link added https://archive.org/details/livingwitness/page/n9/mode/2up Maureen
keithmroberts Posted 19 March Author Share Posted 19 March Thank you Maureen, and great timing as well, as there is a copy of Hamilton's book in the Bodleian, and I am heading to oxford on Wednesday for a day long event on Thursday, but will hopefully have some Bodleian time on Wednesday afternoon, and if needed on Saturday morning before heading home. I have updated the next release with the link for Hammond, and will download it one day to get a feel and hopefully provide a proper description.
