Updated: Bibliography of books on the Salonika Campaign.

@keithmroberts Seen recently  on another topic.  I notice, from the Indexes,  that there are a couple of articles about Salonica, over about four weekly editions (but I haven't access them)

Twenty Years After. The Battlefields of 1914-18: Then and Now, edited by Maj Gen Sir Ernest Swinton, published by George Newnes. A series of 64 weekly editions, also reprinted as three volumes, written by those who had served, with their own photos and biographical accounts, published in the mid-late 1930s, most likely from late 1936. The weekly editions may be accessed (for free) through The Vickers Machine Gun website.

Thanks Maureen

I'll look those up.

I used to have all three bound volumes at one time, but as I was making no use of them I sold them at a GWF conferernce for what I am sure was a pittance.

Thanks, but that one is already listed in the bibliography. Definitely a rare title. There's also a copy at NAM, but it looks to have bypassed the copyright libraries as I can't find it in the Bodleian catalogue..

@keithmroberts

The following digital library from  Aristotle University of Thessaloniki  appears at first investigation to be a source of a number of digital books (pdf files) of interest,  which seem to be part of a collection called the I Megas Collection (which is 419 books in total), so some scrolling to do.

https://digital.lib.auth.gr/search?ln=en&cc=Megas+collection&sc=1&p=&f=&action_search=Search

I intend to upload some to the Internet Archive, but I'm not sure when that will be done.

Some titles that I noticed https://digital.lib.auth.gr/record/150103/?ln=en. Slouch Hat/ Burr

https://digital.lib.auth.gr/record/150331?ln=en Sisters' Quarters Salonika/Fedden

https://digital.lib.auth.gr/record/150307/?ln=en A VAD in Salonika (a Novel)

Maureen,

What a marvellous find. I am less than a quarter of the way through this collection, and there are many that I know are not available on the Internet Archive. I was hoping to put the updated bibliography to bed early next week, but now I can see that I will do well to complete it before heading off later this month with the SCS to Greece and Macedonia. There are rare titles too, that are incredibly expensive to find on the second hand market, and which didn't all make their way into the copyright libraries. I think I'll be able to cancel  a few of the books that I had earmarked for my next trip to Oxford, I won't need to spend quite as many days in The Bodleian now.

Thank you so much for discovering this collection. Regarding an earlier conversation, Alan Wakefield and I, plan to visit Naussa independently, to explore what remains of the timber enterprise there.

For the benefit of others, the majority of titles in this collection are in Greek, and a fair number also in French. Most of the titles in English are already listed in the SCS Bibliography, but in many cases these are the only digitised versdions that I have ever come across. I have no Greek, and my French is abysmal, but users with competence in either language would I am sure find much of interest.

I am now going to check each of the titles in English against the existing bibliography, and add links where appropriate. I hope to add a short description of the book's contents as well, unless there is an adequate one already present. My aim was to complete the updated bibliography before heading of to join the SCS tour, so that the new release can be posted roughly to match the anniversary of the Bulgarian Armistice. I'll still work towards that, but there may have to be a modest delay.

Cheers Maureen

I might manage to fit those links, but have added all the relevant links to the university website, and am running out of time for further updates as far as this edition goes. . Proofreading now, etc, and then final release copy. The downloads from the university are pretty fast, although just as pdf's without the alternate formats of Archive.org.

Here it comes.

I have put release 4 of the Salonika Campaign Bibliography to bed, and it will be posted on the Salonika Campaign Society website at approximately noon on September 30th, which is appropriate, as 30 September marked the first surrender of Great War when Bulgaria formally signed the armistice that recognised defeat.

The bibliography has been enlarged, with further titles, some, thanks to Maureen in particular, and some from a variety of military unit histories that I have researched, and others from suggestions by other SCS and GWF members. Where possible links have been provided to those items that are available in digitised form. For the future I hope to add additional items linked to academic or military journals and welcome suggestions in that regard, with as much detail as possible.

Release 4 will, like its predecessors be free to download, and being basically an Excel worksheet, it is easy to scroll through the content. The authors and titles of new items have been italicised until release 5 emerges next year.

Apart from new titles, and additional links to items available on line, I have also corrected many minor errors, mostly owing their origins to my appalling typing, and pathetic proofreading, but will appreciate  friendly advice on any errors that have managed to survive.

Finally, I shall avoid the complaints, by being out of the country on publication day, as I will be walking the battlefields with an SCS tour.

There is a real gem for Salonika campaign enthusiasts: the booklet "Salonica Again" which describes the return to Salonika in 1952 of two veterans, officers of the Salonika Reunion Association, who travelled by rail, (air was too expensive), to revisit among other locations the 3rd Gymnasium School for Boys in the city, and the village of Mavroplagia, both of which had been adopted by the SRA. They describe not just their travels but also the changes that they saw from their time over 30 years previously.

There must be a few copies of theis booklet in libraries, but it is a real rarity and makes genuinely interesting reading.

Thank you Holger for posting those, they won't be added to the Bibliography because we have limited it to books in English only, but I did study German as a schoolboy, so might try my luck at reading them, with a dictionary at my side), when I return frommy visit to the battlefields.

Keith,

Sorry; - I forget to add:

You can also choose the pure text, and single page format in the
viewer of the Index for `copy & past´ function (necessary for translation)

(Sometimes I have the same problem, by longer English text passages)

Apologies for the slight thread diversion but do any books exist about 4th Rifle Brigade experiences in Salonika?  I have a relative who served in the 4th RB before being commissioned from the ranks.  I'd love to learn more about his time in Salonika.

Many thanks in advance,

Mark

I don't recall one, but you can check the current release by downloading it frpm the SCS website and searching on "Rifle Brigade", or just "brigade" .

I am departing today for Salonika so I'm afraid I don't have time to check for you. If there's no no joy you might like to check the battalions that they served alongside  that battalion.

The order of battle at two dates can be found in the free download of the Official History from the Internet Archive. I think there's a link to that at the top of this thread. I am just going to have a cuppa before catching my train to Gatwick, but the process is easy, to download both the current bibliography, and the two Official History volumes. I'm still seeking to discover more relevant titles to add.

Thanks Maureen that was fast work. I have taken a look and there are 3 chapters on the campaign. I will certainly add that for release 5.  I htink there might be a couple of small problems with the copy as uploaded, but that does not in any way prevent the contents being read.

Thanks again Maureen

All the titles apart from the Royal Scots ones are listed  in the bibliography, but other than the Thessaloniki titles are without links to digital copies. I'm not sure how I missed the Royal Scots as I used to have copies on my own shelves because of the service of a distant connection.

It really is excellent to see more regimental histories emerging in digitised form. Even modern reprints can be expensive, and quite a number have never been reprinted.
