Here is an extract of the letter from Charles Brind of Southall, courtesy FindmyPast Newspapers, West Middlesex Gazette of 15th march 1917. So gives you a London connection plus service Rangoon and Andamans. Seems a very strong possibility.

Brind's Letter is so good for background life in the theatre that I repeat it here, hoping it does not exceed GWF's limits. Many thanks to FindmyPast Newspapers.

Albert Allen 200037 has a Pension Card that confirms he is our man from 190 Selincourt Rd, Tooting! 'ie same as 1939 Register.

So we got there in the end and Brind's letter gives you excellent background. An interesting search but you did try to lead us astray at the start !!

Hi Babs

In the medal roll index cards of the Shropshire Light Infantry there are 43 with a surname of Allen, none with a forename starting with A. In the Medal Rolls there is an Albert Edward Allen, L/10103. This is unlikely to be your ancestor.

In the medal index cards of the Somerset LI, none of the 78 have a forename starting with A. In the medal rolls there is an A Allen, 9029, who died of gas poisoning 9/8/16. There is also an AWJ Allen, 15048, discharged Feb 1918. There is also a Lieutenant AD Allen. In addition to these three there are two Bert Allens, 17536 and 32123.

Finally there is an AA Allen 206245 Bedfordshire Regiment previously 4th Somerset LI.

I cant link to the family details you have given, but hopefully this gives some names and numbers to go on.

With regards to the other brother, reading other queries, the consensus view seems to be to start a new post.

Kind Regards

Derek

Hi Derek

Wow thank you for investigating. Seems to be the same blank that I keep coming up with. Perhaps the Imperial War Museum would have some sort of record but, I'm beginning to suspect, the bombing of the records store during WW11 might be an issue.

Regards Babs.

Charlie

Hi Charlie,

Thank you so much. I wish I was as adept as everyone else seems to be. I have so much info about various branches of my family but want to fill in details. Having the pension card number is a good step forward + Derek's research. Much appreciated.

Btw, today's remembrance is Staff Nurse Edith Amelia Reed, Australian Army Nursing Service. Again nothing to do with me but respect due.

Regards,

Babs.

I suspect that you will get no further but it does at least confirm that he served with the 18th (London) Battalion Rifle Brigade in the Andamans and Burma. Someone in the family perhaps has his British War Medal ?Do let us know, please, if you learn anything more about his time there.
