It looks a lot like a mortarboard, but I can't imagine that this would be very practical on board, let alone on deck at sea......! Chaplains normally wore mortarboards when serving in RN. Some were commissioned as Naval Instructors & could wear the regular RN officer uniform if so. They taught Naval Cadets & Midshipman qualifying for promotion ashore & afloat. Naval Schoolmasters were ratings (CPO's) & taught sailors , (during the Victorian times) how to read & write & for advancement in rate. RNCVR Posted 6 October , 2020 Share Posted 6 October , 2020 I'm sorry I couldn't take better photos, there are many interesting ones . If any member would like to copy the photos first I'll arrange postage. Hope I've stirred a memory or two. Regards Alank Hi Alan, if you feel like sending the album to Canada I will gladly photo the photographs for you! But post cost could be hefty. Actually you are doing pretty good at it, but I would try to shoot each one separately using the close up on yr camera\phone if you have that feature. Its always a challenge taking a photograph of a photo. I am enjoying the photos you are posting....Bryan
