I looked at some notes made recording my grandfather and a couple of his friends.  Note they were 2nd war but he referred to a friend who ‘died in the field’ - this man was wounded in battle and died some time later in the same place not having been able to be evacuated.  This was distinct from another friend they all termed KIA more or less outright.
