Did it work?

Yes, I would like to know if it flies... though I don't expect you to hit the back of a parapet at 150 yards.

It is just for display, but maybe - I will try it sometime.... :)

  • 5 months later...

There is a third kind of boomerang grenade (also for WW1), invented by Garnett Senior, from Surrey (UK). I found this patent paper;

In 1942, Harold Fraser invented another sort of boomerang grenade. Looking at the wingtips, it likely did not fly like a boomerang rather it flew far and stuck deeply into tree trunks. I do not think any of these boomerang grenades were ever used, only tested.  If someone could find a patent paper of this, I gladly would like to know.

There's still another boomerang grenade invented by Frank Donnellan, a famous boomerang thrower. This was like a straight flying kind of boomerang, which was mentioned in a magazine from 1951. Probably invented for WW2. No photo or illustration to show. He did invent invent an arrow with explosive. The magazine says this;

"During the war Donnellan started to think how boomerangs could help the war effort, and came up with an armory adapted to modern warfare that would make the aborigines’ ancestors turn over in their graves. He thought that a grenade which could be thrown a hundred yards or so would be much more lethal weapon. He developed an aboriginal throwing stick with a percussion head, got in touch with the Army inventions board and went to Melbourne to give a demonstration. He landed his throwing stick on a piece of paper 140 yards away. They told him they’d let him know and he’s still waiting. Then he invented an explosive arrow, worked on the catapult principle, with a range of 200 yards. The army rejected that because the terrain where it could be used would be too soft."

Here's the photo from the arrow with explosive head and catapult. This was taken in October 1950. From both inventions I could not find a patent paper, but if it exists I gladly would like to hear about it. Donnellan was from New South Wales (Australia).
