Remembered Today:

RNVR UNIFORM TYPE

Here's a photo of AA1294 Arthur Henry Foyster RNVR who joined in Dec 14, whilst in his 40s, and served on HMS President throughout 1915 until he took up a job as an ammunition inspector. His record of service and Medal Roll (Ancestry) entries describe his rank as A.B. but his uniform seems rather smart. Can anyone identify it and indicate what he might have been doing there?

Thanks.

He was London Division of the RNVR Anti-Aircraft Corps (hence his 'AA' prefix. Discussed previously here:-  https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/143136-rnas-anti-aircraft-unit-1915/

See also:-  https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/development-of-british-anti-aircraft-artillery-in-the-first-world-war/

He is wearing Class III uniform (Red cap badge and black buttons, also worn by (inter alia) junior ratings of the RNAS.

Very many thanks both of you. It didn't occur to me that AA was anti-aircraft. Is there any way I could find out what he actually did in 1915 (training, detachments, locations, activity etc.)?

Thanks again. I just wondered if he was only in training or if they actually deployed to AA gun sites. I suspect the latter and that President was just a holding unit.
