nhclark Posted 11 August , 2019 Share Posted 11 August , 2019 Very interesting to read through the various threads on the sinking of the Mendi. Since there is no obvious match between the names you have given us, and reading the various comments in threads about the use of nicknames etc. for members of the South African Native Labour Corps, I think that the best way forward is to try to find a match with those known to have embarked on the Mendi, rather than the list of those who perished, a list that has less information than the records of the Corps itself. According to Wikipedia, 607 black troops perished, and of those 287 came from the Transvaal. I don't know whether those numbers are up-to-date or not, but the information came from the South African National Defence Force Archive (SANDFA). In 1994 this was merged into another body, but the address is still the same - 20 Visagie Street, Pretoria. Assuming that your great-grandfather gave the correct information concerning his village etc., and that it was recorded accurately, then the search is narrowed to 287 records, and in those if it were me I would look first for matches on the name "Frans" - seems to me that if the authorities were to get anything correct it would be that, and then see if any match your GGF's village. https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/South_Africa_Military_Recordshttp://archivesmadeeasy.pbworks.com/w/page/39274352/South-African-National-Defence-Force-Archive-(SANDFA) http://www.archivalplatform.org/registry/entry/documentation_centre_department_of_defence_force_archives/http://www.dod.mil.za/ Unfortunately I don't have any experience with researching South African war dead. You may be able to find someone who does by diligent use of Google, perhaps an experienced researcher located in Pretoria. My limited experience with SA is with a white family. Absence of comprehensive BDMs is the problem I faced, but the various librarians etc. that I found were incredibly helpful. I can only wish you good luck with further searching for your GGF. ilkley remembers Posted 12 August , 2019 Share Posted 12 August , 2019 You could try searching the South African War Graves Project http://www.southafricawargraves.org/search/index_advanced.php ,casualties from the SS Mendi are listed on it
