Nice find at Pinchfalise brocante on Sunday, 3 euros for the pair. Not sure if they’re GW period so would really appreciate some advice. Also a nicely decorated German 77mm shell case picked up for 5 euros

Funnily enough I picked up it's close relative on Tuesday.

Cheers folks and thanks for the link 265, it answers many questions I now needn’t ask.

I've seen on line (an Enfield website) that the spread Broad Arrows on the Oilers are thought to be pre WW1 and may be associated with the MLE rather than the SMLE

That’s interesting Gunner Bailey, I have to say I’ve never seen a broad arrow like this one before

One arrow variant is the pheon, with nasty barbs on the pointy bit.

Not a lot of people know that.

Unless they saw this thread first!

I forgot to add the names of the makers of the oilers.

ESS - Edwin Showell & Sons - Birmingham - made 300,000 in the Great War

S&Co Ltd Sperryn &Co Birmingham - Made 100,000 in the Great War

The splayed Broad Arrow mark was also used by the London Small Arms Co on oilers and they were certainly making MLE / SMLE's pre WW1.

Also by:-

S Heath & Sons

Nicole, Nielson & Co., Ltd

And Western Electric Co

Gunner,

Could you identify the maker denoted by,

HJ&S , with inspection stamp crown / V6 / B ?

Further, do you have a number for the total of oilers produced during GW?

Regards,

JMB

Edit: should also have asked how many makers were recorded?

HJ&S is Henry Jenkins & sons Birmingham. One of the prolific makers. 1.1m in the war.

There's  very long list.

I used to sell loads of them and kept notes. Will list more later.

That’s fantastic GB thanks for listing these and especially the ID of the two I now have, interesting that Sperryn & Co opted for the splayed broad arrow
