Miniature Clasps to British War Medal

"The Admiralty Committee estimated that the average number of clasps awarded to any one man would be six, and that the maximum would be 13. For comparison the average number of clasps awarded with the Queen’s South Africa Medal was four, and the maximum awarded to one man was ten. Based on these estimates the manufacturing costs for the Naval clasp scheme were calculated at £110,000 (later revised to £135,000) for 2,450,000 clasps. In addition a further £100,000 would be required to fund a Superintending Clerk, a Directing Staff, and 200 clerks to check entitlement and administer the scheme. War Office cost estimates for Army clasps were considerably in excess of this. The original proposal in March 1921 called for the creation of 65 ‘battle’ clasps, plus an unspecified number of ‘area’ clasps for those individuals who entered a theatre of war but who did not qualify for a battle clasp. Manufacturing costs alone for this scheme were estimated at £1¼ million, based on 24 million clasps being required, in addition to an administration cost of £150,000."   I am not 100% certain but I think these figures applied to the full size clasps to be issued for the BWM.

Yes... it was definately going to be a costly exercise.....to have the clasps struck and awarded......but think how interesting it would have made the BWM....and given how many men gave their lives during the war.......I think the cost was worth it.  

 

From memory the final number of clasps submitted for approval were as follows;

 

Navy Clasps x 68

Army Clasps x 79 

 

I see the above Army list has 94 clasps listed....... Does anyone have the revised list??

 

Is anyone a member of the Miniature Medals & Orders Society........they might have a copy of the revised list in their library??
