Margaretnolan Posted 6 May , 2019 Share Posted 6 May , 2019 I am trying to find Thomas McGill 6584, Connaught Rangers on the prisoner of war index on the International Red Cross Website. But I can’t seem to find the Mc or Mac listings! Can anyone help please. Margaret

charlie2 Posted 6 May , 2019 Share Posted 6 May , 2019 Margaret, can I ask what makes you think he was a PoW? He died in France after the armistice of influenza and is buried in Cambrai East Military Cemetery. https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/550970/mcgill,-/ Charlie
Margaretnolan Posted 6 May , 2019 Author Share Posted 6 May , 2019 (edited) I initially found his medal index card, effects etc. on Ancestry then when I googled his name I found an article which said he died after being released from POW camp. Attached here. http://www.northernconstitution.co.uk/news/2018/12/06/gallery/the-war-to-end-all-wars-2379/ Margaret Edited 6 May , 2019 by Margaretnolan
charlie2 Posted 6 May , 2019 Share Posted 6 May , 2019 Thanks Margaret, sometimes the source helps. He isn‘t listed in the Red Cross files as Thomas McGill in any regiment. As such he could not have been in 6th Bn Connaught Rangers at the time of his death, the battalion had been reduced to cadre in April 1918 and finally disbanded in August. Either the newspaper has got the information wrong or he was captured that late in the war that he wasn‘t reported to the Red Cross or he is completely misfiled in the Red Cross records. I had a look at the Irish regiment entries for the name „Gill“ and he doesn‘t appear there either. Charlie

charlie2 Posted 23 September , 2019 Share Posted 23 September , 2019 Margaret, there isn‘t a 8967 Whelan RDF in the medal rolls, the number in the RC files looks to be wrong. If you have any more information on him it would be a good idea to go through the rest of the RDF Whelans to see if you get a match. I can’t locate anything else on him under that number anywhere. 8967 looks like it belongs to McGourty. Thank you for your help Margaret
