On a more serious note. From the 1/8th Bn Manchester Regiment War Diary (September 1917, near Frezenberg) examples of Runner and Rocket Systems:

More information from the War Diary. It appears that the Rocket System was for sending message bearing rockets (each battalion in the attack may have had the same number of rockets)  to the various posts listed:

You're welcome. Quite a bit of planning involved, and in the end the attack was cancelled due to the failure of the 61st Division on their left to take Hill 35!

Hi

Reference Message Rockets, below is the May 1918 amendment to SS 191 (mentioned in previous post) that updated and enlarged upon details of the Message-carrying Rocket that is probably being referred to in previous posts..

Hi,

I enjoyed reading the thread, so I´d like to contribute this from my collection.

A British carrier-pigeon-wagon (don´t know the correct term, sorry) capture by German forces.

During the German attacks of March 1918 some units used radio for comms when telephone lines were destroyed.  The officers used Hindi and Urdu, learnt when serving in India, in an attempt to prevent the Germans easily decoding the messages
