historydavid Posted 20 June , 2007 Share Posted 20 June , 2007 Ian, in an endeavour to try to resolve the number of crew killed when the Asturias was torpedoed by UC 66 on 20th March 1917 I list the 33 names from the CWGC THM list that I have: ANDERSON, J A, JOHN AITKEN, 6th Engineer ANDREWS, A C, ARTHUR CHARLES, Waiter BROWN, A E, ARTHUR EDWARD, Trimmer CROOK, W H, WILLIAM HENRY, Fireman CROSS, S H, STANLEY HENRY, Greaser DONCOM, E T B, EDWARD THOMAS BADEN, Ordinary Seaman EARL, J W, JAMES WILLIAM, Trimmer FLUX, H C, HENRY CHARLES, Fireman GLASSPOOL, E A, EDWIN ALEXANDER, Assistant Baker GOSNEY, T H, THOMAS HENRY, Trimmer GREEN, O W, ORLANDO WILLIAM, Fireman HALL, C H, CHARLES HENTY, Fireman HARVEY, G B, GEORGE BEVIS, Engineer HUMBY, A E, ARTHUR EDWARD, Fireman HUNT, R E, REGINALD ERNEST, Assistant Pantryman JONES, G R, GEORGE ROBERT, Scullion KIMBER, H G, HERBERT GEORGE, Assistant Cook KNELLER, A I, ALBERT ISAAC, Mate of Hold LAWES, R B, RANDOLPH BLAIR, Waiter MANGER, C R P, CHARLES ROBERT PRIOUX, Trimmer ORMAN, V C M, VICTOR CHARLES MAFEKING, Boy REEVES, E H, ERNEST HENRY, Butcher's Mate ROBINSON , J B E, JOHN BERTRAM ERNEST, Assistant Laundryman SEABORN, W W G, WALTER WILLIAM GEORGE, Fireman SHAW, W D, Waiter SHORE, H E G, HARRY EDWIN GERALD, Seaman STONE, H T, HAROLD THOMAS, Steward STONE, R, ROBERT, Fireman TILLYER, J J, JAMES JOHN, Able Seaman TRENERRY, B, BRIDGET, Stewardess TUBB, P N, PERCY NEWTON, Fireman WEST, H S, HENRY SEYMOUR, Fifth Engineer Officer WHITE, J A, JOHN ALBERT, Third Assistant Cook I think that the reason for the difference in numbers is caused by the poor records of the CWGC (before Terry Denham jumps in, let me explain that what the CWGC have. is what was provided to them by the authorities). There are 31 names logged against HMHS Asturias, and a further 2 against SS Asturias If the computor request for your report was made for names from HMHS Asturias the computer would only produce 31 names, because it would ignore the crew casualties listed against SS Asturias (torpedoed same date). This would also apply to any other type of casualty logged against SS Asturias. Hope this explains our difference. Best wishes David ps. Are you aware that more crew lost their lives and are buried in the UK? EDIT by hd; should have addeded that the SS Asturias was, in fact, the HMHS Asturias.
