To go with the above I have now traced a photograph of the officer actually behind the scheme

The originator of the haversack idea is given as Lt Col James Dacres Belgrave, Lt-Col John Dalrymple Belgrave who in July 1917 became a Gen Staff Officer, Intelligence, in the EEF.

quote - “Belgrave outlined his proposal at length, in a typed seven-page SECRET memo to Allenby”

The footnote for this refers to file WO 95/4368 containing 'Operational notes from GHQ EEF GSO' which includes 'Memorandum from Lt Col J D Belgrave to Commanding General EEF', plus endorsements of Belgrave's proposals and Allenby's approval.

Great Stuff Michael.

Pity the other man, worthy though he was, has been shown all over the place  as the man who hatched the plot. Just goes to show that secondary sources should never be relied upon unless confirmed by primary sources. The author’s error is propagated around the internet  and JDB RA has been somewhat denied his place in history.

Just as today's social media users will find, it is virtually impossible to correct !

Hopefully the author might be able to correct his blog and disseminate the right info ?
