david murdoch Posted 30 October , 2017 Share Posted 30 October , 2017 627/200007 Leslie Saxon Bell (Camberwell) BEF 14/9/1916 I have him as Leslie S. Bennett 267/200007 WOII (CSM) previously 3rd Battery MMGS. Tank Corps 14/15 roll is useful with these early 200### numbers as it links to their previous MMGS number and original embarkation dates. david murdoch Posted 30 October , 2017 Share Posted 30 October , 2017 Just now, IPT said: Quite right, my mistake - it's Leslie Saxon Bennett. Cheers. He jumped out due to that low MMGS number and low 200### number. Just looking at 200005 the other day as he came from No.2 Battery. A few of the lads in this range seem to have been NCOs / WOs with prior experience in various original MMG batteries. Some possibly transferred to Heavy Section after being out wounded, or transferred as "core" personnel. David
tanks3 Posted 1 November , 2017 Share Posted 1 November , 2017 IPT For my Lincolnshire Tankies database I am interested William Edward Bocock (Newark - yes I know this is Notts but only just over the border!!)) and Harold Trought (Grimsby) both A Coy men in the list in your OP. Do you have any further info on these two? I have looked on ancestry and have their MIC and medal roll details but I was hoping you may have something to confirm their home address and service details. Thanks Tanks3

Thanks, John It is very interesting - there are actually a lot more MMGS service records surviving than I had imagined - this in part being due to large numbers transferring to the Tank Corps (whose records have a higher survival rate than MGC), also there was a high rate of commissions especially amongst the earlier volunteers. INW Posted 11 November , 2017 Share Posted 11 November , 2017 IPT Thank you very much for this and the links worked fine. I am a member of Ancestry but for some reason I just could not get a search to work for Albert's Service record on Ancestry previously. His army career was very similar to that of my Grandfather. Waggoner Posted 20 November , 2020 Share Posted 20 November , 2020 Nice to see some of the A.S.C. drivers listed. There are probably more. All the best, Gary

My mistake. He was posted to D Coy 30/9/1916 but I have been following your 15/9 rule, so I will amend it.
delta Posted 20 November , 2020 Share Posted 20 November , 2020 (edited) No please leave him where he was - I normally track them using their deployment date, Have just found his service record and see he was wounded on 20 Nov 1917 and again on 27 Sep 1918 I will be able to tell the members of the FTC Facebook Group about him tomorrow Thanks once again for all you are doing. My current project is the first volume in a new Tank Corps history but I keep coming back to my obsession...... delta Posted 21 November , 2020 Share Posted 21 November , 2020 I have found details of his original crew in B Company from an entry of the Peterborough Station soldier's room. Henry visited the place en route from Elveden on 6 September 1916. I have also found details of his marriage, the birth of his two children and the fact that he fell on hard times. He became homeless and was later jailed for 2 months, following his theft from a Salvation Army hostel. Henry died in the summer of 1936; his wife and children living with his father in law in 1939. Lest we forget. .
IPT Posted 21 November , 2020 Author Share Posted 21 November , 2020 That’s an unexpectedly sad tale. What a shame. I’ve put him in B Company for now though, because there are a number of other men listed there who were also posted to D Coy at the end of September.
