JMB1943 Posted 22 September , 2017 Share Posted 22 September , 2017 Very nice to see a Lithgow bayonet together with a Lithgow scabbard. The photos raise some questions for me, basics really, but I'm ignorant about bayonets from Oz. 1. Is the scabbard-button of the small/early or large/late type? 2. Did Lithgow ever put a clearance hole in the pommel? 3. When did Lithgow invert the orientation of their name and symbols? 4. Is there a month stamp to go with the 1915? Your time starts now...... Regards, JMB PS Must admit that I prefer the older GWF format and have selected that display.
trajan Posted 22 September , 2017 Share Posted 22 September , 2017 Indeed a nice piece Aleck - perchance a slavering job for our mate down under! So let's leave it to him to do the honours... JMB - like you, these Ozzie things are beyond me: ever since I saw the moon become inverted after crossing the equator for the first time I have left the Antipodes well alone... But I do admit to a fondness for the Southern Cross, just visible in some parts of your area if I remember aright? Julian PS - JMB, hope the house survived Irma - and yes, a bit under pressure at work so have not responded to the other emails; will do when can
sawdoc34 Posted 22 September , 2017 Author Share Posted 22 September , 2017 (edited) Cheers lads, quite like this one as its in real nice condition & once had a hooked quillion😉 1- it's the small early type button. 2- think they started drilling the clearance holes in the 20s. 3- no idea, will leave that for S/S. 4-think it wasn't until late 1919 that they started to add the month as well as the year. Also have a very nice reg marked Vickers😉 Edited 22 September , 2017 by sawdoc34 Typo

Dave66 Posted 23 September , 2017 Share Posted 23 September , 2017 I'm getting a severe case of Bayonet envy looking at this topic....very nice indeed. Keep them coming, I need an excuse for something to turn me to drink!!! regards, Dave.
sawdoc34 Posted 23 September , 2017 Author Share Posted 23 September , 2017 HQ removed Mole has been DPd but it's in a rarer Brit double seam scabbard😉
Dave66 Posted 23 September , 2017 Share Posted 23 September , 2017 Extremely scarce combination, many thanks for sharing them....I'm opening the bottle now!!! Heres my wilkinson H.Q.R. later converted to D.P. Saw service through both wars and regimentally stamped up to the worcesters, tons of history, loads of inspection stamps. Dave. Nice on Dave, certainly been around....love those reg markings☺ Having a few Guinness myself...will post a couple of reg marked ones tomorrow & the Remmington 07 (if I can remember where I stashed it when I sneaked it into the house past the dragon 😉)

She that must be obeyed always knows when something new comes in, always costs me far more than the bayonet when the shoe shop is not far away from the supermarket!! Enjoy the Guiness, I'm on a bottle of red. looking forward to the next instalment. Dave.
sawdoc34 Posted 23 September , 2017 Author Share Posted 23 September , 2017 (edited) Guess it's a couple of Jamesons after the Guinness runs out in case I get captured with the Remmington ...enjoy the wine mate 😉 Edited 23 September , 2017 by sawdoc34
Dave66 Posted 23 September , 2017 Share Posted 23 September , 2017 Sounds like the Jameson's would be essential to the plan and purely for medicinal purposes only...if you haven't surfaced by tomorrow we'll assume the worst...she's found the Remington. After seeing the last three and feeling totally inadequate, I might have to open another red...cheaper than a perscription. Heres a couple of pics of an August 17 Wilkinson, unit marked to the 1st Cheshires, with no further inspection stamps. The scabbard came with it but I don't think it's original as its unit stamped 2.1.N.R.V. 580...unusual to see a scabbard stamped in such a manner on the top of the locket so may be a colonial marking. Initial thoughts were north riding volunteers or Northampton rifle volunteers, would appreciate any help on that one as drawn a blank so far. regards, Dave. trajan Posted 24 September , 2017 Share Posted 24 September , 2017 Heck, the way you chaps are finding and posting things then I may have to take a day-off each week to catch up and keep tally! All nice ones, Sawdoc (that Mole...!!!) and Dave (don't you just love marked-up bayonets with a history!)... Like JMB, I feel like shouting 'Enough, enough!', but will console myself with looking at my Greek Y.1903 collection, including its Naval example... As is, 'Yah, sucks, booh'! They're all fascinating, and I only have a few more P1907's....my collection mainly consists of P1888's so there may be some winter work in that topic. Any thoughts on the 2.1.N.R.V. Unit stamping?. sawdoc34 Posted 24 September , 2017 Author Share Posted 24 September , 2017 N.R.V. is a strange one but guess you are right Dave the R.V. must be Rifle Volunteers🤔 Here's another one that I have on my phone (didn't have a chance to sneak any more out for pics )

Good ww1 bayonet with what looks like an interwar refinish and good unit markings...have you done any work on whereabouts of the anit aircraft company? I'm on kitchen duty this evening, so will get another piece up in a day or so. Dave.

I can't find it in the copies of 'Instructions to Armourers' that I have, for 1897-1916. 'Rifle Volunteers' seems reasonable - but not GB. When did those units 'fade away'? The Natal RV was abolished before 1907, IIRC, and by 1912/1916, the only RV unit I am aware of was the Bermuda RV. 22 hours ago, sawdoc34 said: N.R.V. is a strange one but guess you are right Dave the R.V. must be Rifle Volunteers🤔 I think this is an Inter-war or WW2 marking? I have no idea what the 'P' is but I'll take a guess that this is a Royal Engineers Unit - I did wonder if 'Anti-artillery Company', but that seems unlikely to me! Trajan Many thanks for having a look Trajan, I'm stumped on it too, as can't find anything official to point me in the right direction have to keep it in the "needing further research file". Could be from anywhere in the commonwealth I suppose, never mind, we can't know everything, and never say never. I think you're correct in saying that Sawdocs is an interwar stamping, looks to be Teritorial Royal Engineers ?57 Anti Aircraft Company. JMB1943 Posted 25 September , 2017 Share Posted 25 September , 2017 The Vickers is unit-marked on the tang, which to me is very unusual! "4 DT CASC"---could that be for 4th Detachment, Canadian Army Service Corps"? Regards, JMB
Dave66 Posted 25 September , 2017 Share Posted 25 September , 2017 Really nice one that vickers, and ,as you say most unusual place to put the unit markings...all struck through though. i was wondering if it were 7th Divisional Train, Canadian Army Service Corps...its a maybe. Wondering if the 4 35 and 41 are all some sort of reissue/inspection stamps indicating Ww2 service....can't see any pommel markings. Dave
