I've managed to waste some time, and discover nothing. Still, it keeps me off the streets and out of trouble.

If it's of any interest, almost all the men below transferred from cyclist battalions. The first 70 or so were from Yorkshire. After that, they're from the North Midlands. I suppose the fact that none of the casualties attended the dinner supports the idea that it was a victory celebration?

I've learned a lot, so thank you.

If they're all 18 KLR men on the postcard, then for me this makes a victory celebration less likely, as Laurence was wounded 31st July 1917 (battle of Pilckem Ridge) and sent home soon thereafter. By the time of the armistice he was already in the Labour Corps.

Unless of course, Laurence wasn't there either (his writing isn't on the card), and was sent/given this by his old mates? Still planning to trawl through the war diary this weekend, hopefully that'll narrow it down.

Sgt. L. W. Waring's name looks to be separate from the other names, and at 90 degrees to them, as if he was the addressee, so, as you say, perhaps it was to be forwarded to him, but in an envelope.

Thanks for all contributions so far. I've been doing some more searching this weekend, and I think so far we have (top to bottom on the card):

1. G Sutton "Sammy". MAYBE 16999 18 KLR Company Sergeant Major. (could "Sammy" have been slang for Sergeant Major? Or American soldier?)

2. R. E. Pavey?

3. N. Kiteley?

4. J or T Rickman?

5. Horace James Pugh, Sgt 16265 18 KLR. KIA 31/07/1917

6. C. Fletcher?

7. Leonard Conolly, Sgt 57831 18 KLR (later 20 KLR and 17 KLR, formerly 1795 London Regiment). KIA 01/05/1918 (with 17 KLR). Commemorated at Tyne Cot

8. Percy Welborn, Sgt 57611 18 KLR. Awarded the MM

9. Cecil Hamilton Charteris Ure, Sgt 16687 18 KLR (later 2/LT)

10. Arthur Edward Burt, Sgt 57502 18 KLR. KIA 31/07/1917

11. William Holmes, Sgt 57597 18 KLR (later 2/LT York and Lancaster Regiment)

12. Jeffrey James Smith, Sgt 29181 18 KLR (later 2/LT)

13. MAYBE Lionel F Mason, Sgt 33857 18 KLR. Awarded the MM

14. MAYBE Thomas Watson, Sgt 36217 18 KLR

15. George Clarke Watson, Sgt 235271 18 KLR

16. No idea on this one - F or G Warvall?

I'm stuck on those in italics. Any advance on the above?

Date wise, as one of the above was KIA on 1st May 18, and two more on 31st July 17, it must be before that!

Thanks again for all the help.

Excellent, thanks. Looks like a very good bet. I hadn't had much luck with wildcard searches - seems I should have tried harder!

I reckon this could be Robert Evan Parry, Sgt 17158 18 KLR. Another one KIA 31/07/1917

He has a surviving service record, too.

This group has taken an enormous number of casualties.

Do you have a link to Parry's SR on Ancestry- I can't find it!

Edit. Got it, His regiment is indexed as KLCB

Edit. Edit.Yes, that's his signature!

The S in 'Sutton' and "Sammy" are different. I'd suggest that "Sammy" is a separate name.

Yes, could be Alfred (see post #35 above, his number of 57603 is compatible with some others.

Mind you, so are Alexander ( 15799 ) and Arthur ( 16009 )

Thanks. I agree. On that basis he'll be difficult to identify, but I'll look for 18 KLR Sergeants called Sam, Sammy, Samuel etc.

Regarding A Fletcher, probably too many possible candidates to be able to identify this one, I guess. Although as Alfred Fletcher is only 3 numbers away from Laurence (57603 versus 57606) I could be persuaded that it's him.

Here is some information about one of the individuals which I have recorded on "Lives". https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/3616475#timeline

His papers in Ancestry show him at Home until 06.11.1915 and again between Home 27.06.1916 to 27.02.1917. Have to been able to more closely pin down the date of the event?

Best wishes

Alun

Hi Alun, many thanks for this. As it happens, I'm the other contributor to that Lives entry :-)

Yes - according to the 18KLR war diary, these chaps were billeted in Tournehem during July 1917, so that dates the card very nicely. This was presumably for a bit of R&R (?) before things kicked off at Ypres on 31st July - the day Horace Pugh was killed, and my Great Grandad was wounded.

All the best

Ben

Here is Cecil Hamilton Charteris Ure’s identity bracelet next to the card he signed - perhaps for the first time since July 1917:
1E5CC2BD-FA92-475F-8B63-EE45BEF01828.jpeg.8fc9ad412f471e0fb1e57f0ccc8b80ae.jpeg

Some of the thrupenny bits on the chain are later additions as they post-date the war - they range in date from 1897-1940. Presumably a good luck charm? No idea.

Thanks again to Carmel for spotting it for sale, I’m delighted to have it.

what a result ! Well spotted Carmel. This thread has inspired me to dig out my grandads pow postcards with which I will begin a new thread. From memory there are a couple of group photos with the names of the subjects on the rear,
